On-Farm Financing

Peruvian CassiopeiaAlmost nine years ago when we first started thinking about the possibility of getting started in the alpaca business we came across two major hurdles. The first was finding the right alpaca. How would we know the right alpaca? How could we be sure this animal was a good animal, worth its price? We looked at several animals, some lower priced, some higher priced, and then we found her, our first purchase. She was excellent in every way but also carried a pretty high price tag. Now came our second hurdle. How in the world would we find the money to buy her? And although many people buy alpacas through cash purchases and we have purchased many alpacas since then through cash purchases, I remember walking away from the farm thinking, who could afford to spend that kind of money on an ALPACA? Surely not us...

We certainly didn't have the money to "risk" on such an investment "animal." We weren't independently wealthy, didn't have any inheritance out there waiting for us to collect, but we did have a dream. We dreamed about all the babies she would have, how much they would be worth because she was so nice, and we visited the farm daily and learned all we could about alpacas, their care, their nature, their value...their value...their value. This really looked to be quite the investment!

We then decided to approach the owners and tell them how much we liked her and also wanted to tell them that even though we had been visiting daily, there was just no way we could afford to buy alpacas. We really felt that it was a worth-while investment, just not one that we could afford. After all, not many of us have twenty-some thousand dollars laying around in the bank.

"You don't have to make a cash purchase. You can finance your alpaca, much like you do a car. Put a certain percentage down and you can make monthly payments over the next few years." It sounded like a crazy idea but one that proved to be the best and only choice for us. We then ran home and figured, refigured, reworked and refigured our budget again. Financing our first alpaca was the only way we would be able to get started in the business. We discussed it with each other, worried about making the right -- or wrong -- decision and then decided to go ahead and finance our first alpaca through the farm we purchased from. That one single decision has proven to be one of the best decisions we have ever made.

We have, since then, purchased many animals, some through financing, many through cash purchases and have been very happy with our decision to become involved in the alpaca business. We decided to use financing as a means to get our "foot in the door" to the world of alpacas and have never regretted it. It allowed us the opportunity to "afford" something many people only dream of doing and gave us the ability to start our own business together.
