The Andrea Doria was a luxury passenger liner 700 feet long and 90 feet wide. She sank back in July 25, 1956 off the coast of New York in 240 feet of water after colliding with the Stockholm. She rests on the bottom on her starboard side. The wreck is a spectacular sight in its shear magnitude. The hull has begun to deteriorate rapidly in recent years after almost fifty years on the bottom of the sea. A group of AUE divers set out to dive the Andrea Doria on July 10th 2001. I have attempted to dive the Doria before but have been blown out. Our plan for this year was to do three days of diving on the Doria and hit the Oregon and the USS San Diego on our way back to port.

Load-Out 1

A trip to the Doria wouldn't be a Doria trip unless you take a ton of gear along. We loaded up the boat with tons of tanks, scooters and other equipment to make our dives on this wreck.

Load-Out 2

Just to make things even we load out this side of the boat with just as much stuff. Sleepy surveys the lock-down as we prepare to get under way.

Tie-In

Here is where we were tied into the wreck. Very little sunlight was penetrating to the depth of the wreck. It is almost impossible to distinguish this dive from a night dive.

Reel

We located this Dive-Rite Explorer reel on the bottom and recovered it. As it turns out, one of the crew on our boat had lost it years earlier.
