  U2513

The U-2513 was taken as a war prize by the Allies at the end of WWII. The 2513 was a Type XXI German sub developed towards the end of the war. Originally designed to run on Hydrogen Peroxide fuel, all type XXI submarines were converted to run on a more conventional diesel-electric power plant before being completed. The type XXI was extremely advanced for its time and some diesel-electric subs still in operation to this day are close copies. It was dissected, scrutinized, operated and eventually sunk off the Dry Tortugas as part of a Navy experiment. The images on this page were taken on an AUE trip in July 2000.

Hedge Hogs

Hedge Hogs, an explosive device similar to a depth charge, litter the site. As I descended for the first time on this wreck I landed right next to one. Thankfully it had already exploded.

Jewfish

A small Jewfish swims around the conning tower.

Conning Tower

We tied into the conning tower of the wreck. The loop to the right is an antenna.

Torpedo Tube Outer Doors

These are the outer doors to the torpedo tubes. There were three tubes per side.

Sonar Dome

One the bottom of the bow of the sub is the sonar dome. The sonar system on this sub was very advanced for its time.

Screw

This is the propeller.

Hull

A view along the hull of the sub.

Pressure Hull

Here is a good picture of the inner pressure hull of the ship. It was heavily damaged in the sinking.

Grouper

A small grouper swims along the wreck.

Drive Shaft

Inside the wreck the coupling to one of the drive shafts can be seen.

Mike

Mike Barnett checks out the screw and rudder.

Mikey

Mike Rodriguez swims along the wreck.

Fish

A few colorful fish dart in and out of the wreck.

Hole

As I swam along the starboard side of the hull I came across this hole. It was to small to stick my head into to take a look around so I just stuck the camera through to see what was inside... I didn't see what came out on the images until after the dive.

Stern

I pointed the camera towards the stern and got some pretty exciting images of wiring hanging down inside the hull...

Bow

As I pointed the camera towards the bow this enormous jewfish, who was apparently watching what I was doing, was staring right into the camera. He was probably contemplating swallowing the entire thing. Keep in mind I had no idea what was on the footage until after the dive. This little story gets better...

Mike Meets Jewfish

As I pulled the camera out of the hole I noticed that my buddy Mike was exploring inside the sub. He was looking down at some items on the floor. Mr. Jew Fish was just sitting there staring at him thinking he probably looked a little tastier than the camera that had just been shoved in his face. Notice the large bubbles on the right side of the image. I think he just looked up and saw his little friend!

Tiny Fish

Some tiny, brightly colored fish swim inside the structure.

Machinery

This is a view of some machinery inside the sub.

Bow

The very top of the bow looked like it had been opened with a can opener. Inside you can see the reinforcing ribs.

Grouper

Another grouper swims inside the wreck.
