The USS Wilkes-Barre was a Cleveland Class Light Cruiser over
600 feet in length. She carried 12 six-inch main guns located in
four triple turrets, two forward and two aft. She also carried 12
five-inch guns in six twin turrets, 20 40mm and 10 20mm
anti-aircraft guns. Heavily armed, she served throughout the
Pacific theater during WWII where she received four battle stars
for her service. After the war she was decommissioned and placed
in "mothballs" until 1972 when she was sunk off the
coast of Key West as part of a Navy underwater explosives test.
Her hull broke in two and now lies on the bottom in 240 feet of
water. The bow section is resting on her starboard side while the
stern section lies a few hundred feet away sitting upright. This
makes for a very spectacular wreck dive.
