The Intake Unit is often the first introduction to SAAF for a person with AIDS or HIV illness. In comprehensive one-to-one interviews, trained staff clinicians help each potential client assess his or her service. needs, learn about the SAAF programs best able to meet those needs, and develop a referral plan to various SAAF services and services provided elsewhere.

Each intake interview covers client needs for physical and emotional support, medical and mental health history, drug and alcohol use history, employment and financial status, housing status, family background, sexual history, and leisure-time interests. In addition to gathering information, the interview serves as an important intervention in its own right, providing time for a person with HIV or AIDS to receive support, assess their- situation and learn about resources available to them.
