Scuba Duba was founded in 1963, in Long Beach, California by William "Randy" Crawford, III as a boat
hull cleaning service.
Six years ago the company was approached
by American Golf because Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club in Irvine was having problems with sand in their sprinkler nozzles.
They did not know the location of the lake intake and were trying to avoid draining the lake. The Scuba Duba divers
were able to find the intake, which was buried in sand.
Randy, who is a graduate engineer from Stanford
University, devised a method of extracting sand and debris from around lake intakes and wet wells . This process traps solid
material and allows clean water to flow back into the lake. The result is water without the suspended solids pumped
through the irrigation system.
After the success at Rancho San Joaquin,
then came Casta del Sol Golf Club, Western Hills Golf and Country Club, Lake Forest Golf and Practice Center, and Coto de
Caza Golf and Racquet Club.
In the meantime, the core business of boat
hull cleaning was also expanding, and it was time to determine if the time and energy the Golf Course Irrigation Cleaning
was worth taking the time away from boat hull cleaning. In the fall of 1999, Randy called upon someone he had known
socially for 30 years.
Randy asked Charlie Anderson if
he would research the potential of establishing a golf course division within Scuba Duba.
On January 1, 2000, Scuba Duba Golf Course
Services was officially established as a division of Scuba Duba Corporation. Charlie Anderson became the Director of
Operations and began to make contact with golf courses in three Southern California areas. He joined the Southern
California, San Diego and Hi-Lo Desert Golf Course Superintendent Associations.
Jesse Terrazas joined the SDGCS team 3 years ago
after working commercial jobs in the Gulf of Mexico. Jesse is now SDGCS' Field Supervisor. And has the ability
to accomplish most any job underwater. Along with Jesse, SDGCS also employs two other highly skilled divers.
Our equipment
is proprietary and our service unique. SDGCS only employs commercial divers, who have graduated from the College of
Oceaneering. They have been trained to work in "Black Water" and are capable of doing just about anything
underwater.
After two years of extensive research and experimentation,
SDGCS developed equipment specifically designed for the golf course industry. With the availability of this new patented
underwater cleaning equipment coupled with extensive experience in underwater construction and repair, SDGCS is the only company
able to offer a complete underwater cleaning and repair service. The company offers golf courses a low cost alternative
to costly shutdown and repairs to their pump stations. The service provides a low-cost preventive maintenance and repair
program without violating the integrity of the course surroundings or disruption to operation and play.
Besides our unique underwater cleaning service SDGCS
designs, fabricates and installs Intake Grates and Pump Bowl Screens to fit the specific needs of the individual golf course.
At SDGCS we emphasize the use of a small amount of
preventive maintenance. This allows courses to operate their irrigation systems at peak efficiency reducing
and lowering thecost of repairing pumps and sprinkler nozzles because of excessive wear and clogging.
Although relatively new to the golf course industry,
SDGCS knows the constraints placed upon superintendents when it comes to trying to get everything done to keep their
courses alive with limited funds. If SDGCS can save a superintendent money by helping save on water usage
and replacement costs, then we have done our job. Small particles of silt, sand & debris accumulate on
the bottom of all lakes. It is not readily seen, but it builds up and is eventually pulled into the pumps and
out into the sprinkler nozzles. This wearing process is slow and VERY costly. Think of it as liquid
sand paper, and SDGCS is here to take it out.
