"In Between" is the story of an attractive, articulate, educated woman named Tracy who meets a tall, fine and charismatic Haitian photojournalist named Raoul Luise. The two have coffee which leads to a torrid three-month sexual relationship. Then one day Raoul doesn’t show up for a lunch date. Was Raoul just another disappointing Black man out to break the sister's heart; was Raoul real or just figment of Tracy’s imagination? Is love real or an illusion? "For Colored Boys Who've Considered Homicide" is an intense drama about an ancestor who travels through time to interrogate a murderer. "For Colored Boys…" won the best short film award at the 2003 Urban Literary Film Festival, "Best of Show" at the Central Florida Film Festival and "Best Drama" at the National Black Programming Consortium's "Prized Pieces". "Race Juice: An Elixir for the Soul" is a satire on race, the media, and suburbia. "Ezekiel's Dream Psalms 69" is a prayer from a man wrongly accused of a crime who begs God to punish his accusers.

Filmmaker Narcel G. Reedus will be in attendance. All films are screened @ the Magnolia Lounge 1211 Grand Avenue (inside Fair Park, behind the African American Museum) Dallas, Texas 75210. Call 214-426-1683 or 214-939-2787.

DISTANT
Friday, September 24, 6 pm

Set in Istanbul, this is the story of a photographer,
haunted by the feeling that the gap between his ideals
and his real life is growing wider, who finds himself
obliged to take in a young relative who has left
behind his village looking for a job aboard a ship.
The film was awarded the Jury Grand Prize at the 2003
Cannes Film Festival, where and Ozdemir and Toprak
shared the prize for Best Actor. The previous
December, Toprak died in a traffic accident. He was
28.
Unrated; 109 minutes; Turkish with English subtitles

MOTORCYCLE DIARIES
Friday, September 24, 8 pm

Fresh from Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto—and a week
prior to its commercial release—comes one of the most
critically acclaimed movies of the year.
"It is a story of two young men who leave on an
adventurous journey throughout an unknown continent,
and this journey of discovery becomes one of
self-discovery as well. This is a film about the
emotional and political elections we have to make in
life. It’s also about friendship and solidarity.
Finally, it’s about finding one’s place in the world."
(Director Walter Salles.) The Motorcycle Diaries
introduces us to Ernesto Guevara before he becomes the
icon and historical figure the world has come to know
as "Che." Look for this film to be included among the
nominees for Best Foreign Language Film of the year.
R for language; 128 minutes; Spanish with English
subtitles

BRIGHT LEAVES
Saturday, September 25, 5 pm

"A reflective, wise, often hilarious movie!" (Stephen
Holden, The New York Times.) Journey across the
tobacco terrain of North Carolina with a native
Carolinian whose great-grandfather created the famous
"Bull Durham" brand of tobacco.
Unrated; 107 minutes; English

TARNATION
Saturday, September 25, 7 pm

One of the most vivid and original movies in recent
memory, Tarnation has the likes of Roger Ebert and Gus
Van Sant gushing with praise. Filmmaker Jonathan
Caouette's documentary on growing up with his
schizophrenic mother—a mixture of snapshots, Super-8,
answering machine messages, video diaries, early short
films, and more—is culled from nineteen years of his
life. A highlight of the Sundance and Cannes film
festivals this year, it will screen at the Modern
weeks prior to its premiere at the New York Film
Festival.
Unrated; 105 minutes; English

WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH
Sunday, September 26, 2 pm

He Ping's "panoramic epic should wow any viewer with
the natural splendor of white deserts, red mountains,
and green valleys.”"(Ned Martel, The New York Times.)
A Japanese emissary is sent to the Gobi desert to
execute a renegade soldier. When a caravan
transporting a Buddhist monk and a valuable treasure
is threatened by thieves, however, the two warriors
unite to protect the travelers.

R for violence; 117 minutes; Mandarin with English
subtitles

BORN INTO BROTHELS
Sunday, September 26, 4:30 pm

"This is a work of art so deep and resonant that it
puts most narrative films to shame." (James Greenwood,
Hollywood Reporter.com.) Two documentary filmmakers
chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta, and the
relationships they developed with children of
prostitutes who work the city's notorious red-light
district. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2004
Sundance Film Festival.
Not Rated; 85 Minutes; English
