Free Screenings: (updated 11/07/2005)
To see if there are extra
tickets left for current screenings, go to the home page. We try
to update these by Monday morning for the upcoming week, although we
will put last minute information up as soon as we can.
To find out about upcoming screenings, go to the home page. We
try to update the pickup information for upcoming screenings by Friday
morning (the pickups themselves are usually, but not always, on the
weekends). This
information will be moved to Archives after the screening takes place.
To find out about past screenings, go to Archives.
To find out how to get free screening tickets and how to attend the
screenings, read on.
If you attend one
of
the events and want to
say you had a good time or want to talk back to the movie (whether you
saw it through us or on your own), this is your
chance to do it. Just email your comments, general or movie
reviews,
to Betty Jane or Tom at bookies@gte.net.
How to Get Free Screening Tickets and How to Attend a Free
Movie Screening
There are many ways to get
invited to a free movie screening.
Thumbing through the movie section of the Dallas Observer when it comes
out on Thursdays youu will find
two to three announcements of ticket giveaways (usually, but not
always, in the movie section). You can also subscribe to the
Angelika, Landmark Theaters (Magnolia and Inwood), DMA, Deep Ellum Film
Festival, Arts Card, KERA, radio stations, film societies, film
production companies, or other groups' email lists. (Also check
out their websites.) (If you subscribe to these, you will
receive your
free passes by email or snail mail.) Once you have the ticket
giveaway announcement and/or pass through mail or email, check your
schedule so you can both pick up your pass and wait in
line at the theater in a timely fashion. Usually arriving an hour
earlier than the time requested, but no later, will do. Allow
extra time for shows you feel are going to be very popular. Call the
pick up location before hand to get major cross streets. (Bring the
name and phone number of the pickup site in case you get lost).
(Some people
bring camp stools.) (Accordions, pets, and informal movie discussions
can spring up.) Usually the tickets are gone by 10 minutes after the
official giveaway begins. One ticket is good for two
people. If you take
friends with you to do this, one can arrive early and save places for
the others (this is an accepted custom now). The same timing
instructions go for arriving at the theater. If the show is very
popular, realize that the tickets were probably given away at more
locations than just the one you were at, and that they probably
overbooked the theater, and arrive even earlier to ensure a seat.
The same holds true for saving places. It is an accepted custom
because this allows people who get off work later to go too. If
you come late, you do run the chance of not getting in, so accept it
gracefully if it happens. Sometimes the people in charge of the
screening will take your name and send you tickets for another
screening of a different movie, if they can't get you in.
Pre-show activities vary from trivia giveaways to karate
demonstrations. If you have the time, you can enjoy the pastime of
movie screening and you will see the best movies in town before they
are released to the general public for free (also good relaxation
therapy). If you wind up with extra tickets, or an extra seat,
let us know and perhaps someone from Movie SIG might join you.
How
to Get to the Magnolia:
Going south on 75 (Central), exit at
Haskell-Blackburn and Lemmon. Turn right at the first light onto
Blackburn. The
first light will be McKinney. Turn left at Cole, the second
light,
and proceed past two entrances into West Village. Turn left at
Starbucks (patio tables) into West Village. The theater will be
on your right, but go past it and turn left (after Taco Diner) and then
immediately left again into the free, 4-story
parking garage and park. Don't
park on the open roof top because it doesn't have an elevator down and
you will have to use the stairs down to Floor 4; however, do drive up
to the open roof above 4 before your leave for one of the best views of
downtown Dallas. Walk to the south side of the parking lot (where you
first entered the parking garage) and you'll come out in the heart of
West Village (an outdoor
village of shops
and restaurants). You will be able to see the Magnolia just
across the street. The theater has stairs, escalator, and
elevator access
upstairs, and a relaxing lounge area. In West Village are also
Paris
Vendome, Nikita's, Taco Diner, Tom Tom Noodles, Celebrity Bakery,
Starbuck's, and many great places to shop. Fun during both the
day and at night.
Another Theater To Know About:
The Plano10 Movie Theater is located on the southeast
corner of Coit
and Park in Plano. It is a dollar movie house.($1.50 after 6) Go
any day except for Tuesday when the seats are $.50 and everyone else
goes. On one accidental Tuesday visit I thought every school in
the Dallas area was having a field trip. On my accidental Tuesday
drop in last week at 7 all of the parking spaces were filled and the
overflow went across the street to the northeast corner of Park and
Coit. (Lots of fancy cars, but everyone in comfortable
clothes).Whoever is in charge of picking the movies here has good
taste, the seats and restrooms are kept in good shape, but hot dogs are
no longer $1.00.
Hope to run in to you here one day!
