A North Texas Mensa Cultural Arts Special Interest Group

This special interest group was first formed as the Affordable Culture SIG, but with the price of gas alone, it became increasingly difficult to keep some of the events at $10 and under. In addition, if a not-to-be-missed art exhibit or Ringo Starr comes to Ft. Worth, we're going to Ft. Worth at any price, and we would like to let everyone know about it on the site so they can come with us, if they like.

For these reasons, we are renaming the Affordable Culture SIG to just Cultural Arts SIG. But don't worry, we will still have all the affordable events on it as well. In addition to the events, there is also general information about finding affordable events sprinkled throughout, so reading the past entries can also be helpful. Also many of venues put on similar events each year, so you have events to look forward to. Also, you will find most of the information for now on this homepage as this site is still young, but we plan to expand to all the areas in the Cultural Arts SIG menu when we can.

We also consider movies to be a very important part of our culture, but they are not included here because we have a whole other website just for them: moviesig.sytes.net or click on Cultural Arts SIG under SIGs at the North Texas Mensa website: northtexasmensa.org.

Now on to the theater, lectures, events, museums, galleries, music, and dance! Please join us! We also welcome any other cultural events from North Texas Mensa members and other neighboring Mensa group members.

Note for 4/27/2008: We have been on hiatus for about a year and a half tending to other duties, but now we are ready to play again.;-)

We have archived all that we had up before and you might want to look through the archives to see what we have been doing. Many of the same events are going on, but the times and prices have probably changed, but some variation of the event is still out there.

So starting fresh in April, 2008, we thought about what was out there that probably might not be in the Dallas Morning News Guide, which does a very good job and should serve as one of your primary cultural event resources. (We used to have the Dallas Morning News Guide linked through the North Texas Mensa website under Links and Local News.) If it was in the Guide, but really, really good, we'll still list it. We decided to provide both interesting information to all and to post special North Texas Mensa events. --Betty Jane, Tom, Heather, and Jim

First off, we have added to the Cultural Arts Steering Committee, NTM's own Jim Mathis, who may very well live and breathe art. Each week we will publish his in depth coverage of Gallery Openings in the Dallas and Ft. Worth area.

Saturday, January 2. (NTM Cultural Arts SIG DAD hop.) A Tour of the Dallas Art District, Both Old and New. Meet in front of the Trammell & Margaret Crow Asian Art Museum, www.crowcollection.org, 2010 Flora St., Dallas 75201-2335, (214) 979-6430; .(right across from the Nasher on Flora and on the east side of the DMA) at 9:30 AM. The tour, given by the Dallas Arts District tour guides will last for an hour and a half and be very thorough and educational. The Dallas Arts District has started charging for their public tours now, with $10 per adult, $5 per student, and free for children under 12. After the tour ends, we can slip into the Nasher as they have extended their free first Saturdays till 2:00 PM. (They have wonderful food.) We can also visit the Crow Museum, always free, if we like. We are also inviting Mensa 76 to join us. In December:

Tuesday, December 22 at 7:00 PM. (NTM Cultural Arts SIG trip to MSA.) A great Messiah Sing-Along presented by the Dallas Bach Society featuring the audience as the chorus, the Dallas Bach Orchestra and soloists under the Artistic Director, James Richman, who makes this an educational and a joyous event every year. It will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dallas, at 7611 Park Ln Dallas, TX 75225-2028 (214) 368-1371.(The following is an update as of 12/20: The cost is $15 for Mensa members (ask for Rachel), They will again have scores available to buy ($15), but I recommend bringing your own or borrowing one from a church choir). Usually the parts are seated together (but with families included) to give everyone musical and emotional support. What is produced can be quite ethereal. Oh, by the way, James Richman likes to have us sing every song in the score if possible, so you may hear/attempt/sing songs you have never heard before. It's great fun! We can meet up at the ticket booth, but we'll probably be too worn out to do anything afterwards. :-).--Betty Jane

Recommended: December 18-19, from 6:30 p.m. The Heard Holiday Trail of Lights at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, 1 Nature Place, McKinney, $5 for adults. $3 for children ages 3 to 12, free for children 2 and younger. The fun includes a tree-lighting, strolling through thousands of twinkling lights along the "Dinosaurs Alive! nature trail, entertainment in the outdoor amphitheater, a hayride, caroling and complimentary hot beverages. Kids of all ages can take photos with Father Christmas and Mother Nature.

Monday-Friday, December 14-18, noon-1 PM (NTM Cultural Arts SIG trip to HCL event.) WRR 101.1 FM Broadcasts Holiday Carols Live from the Lobby of the Adolphus Hotel, located at 1321 Commerce Street in downtown Dallas, 75202, (214) 377-6031 Come to any or all concerts. I want to go to every one. Monday, listen to the Turtle Creek Chorale; Tuesday, ARTS DISTRICT CHORALE (change); Wednesday, Texas Boys Choir/Singing Girls of Texas; Thursday, The PLANO CIVIC CHORUS (change); Friday, the Dallas Symphony Chorus. (The concerts will also be presented live on WRR, 101.1.). This is a really lovely way to get the holiday spirit. Their lobby is very luxurious and you can relax in comfortable, elegant chairs and couches surrounded with lovely art work while having complimentary cider, punch, and cookies. See Picture 1 in the Around the Hotel photo gallery at hoteladolphus.com. The only cost is for parking in their garage, if you choose to do so. (The hotel has only valet parking at $8/hour and you're looking at close to 2 hours. City Park, a parking lot just down the block on Field between Elm and Main has parking at $5 for all day.) Unless I'm driving carpool, I'm going to park at the Dallas Public Library and stroll over to Commerce, enjoying Neiman's decorated windows on the way. Do come early because this event fills the room fast and you want to be able to sit down. Lovely live music, up close and personal. Latino Cultural Center Presents Its
6th Annual Posada

Dec. 13, 2009
4-8 p.m.

Join the Latino Cultural Center in celebrating the Latin American tradition of Posadas. In Latin America, a "Posada" represents the journey Mary and Joseph took on their way to Bethlehem. As part of the tradition, the community sings traditional Latin American carols - stopping at various locations seeking "shelter."

Procession will begin at Central Square Park at the corner of Swiss Ave. and Oak St. at 4 p.m. At the end of the procession, carolers will be welcomed to the LCC Plaza by Matachines dancers.

The event is free and open to the public, with traditional refreshments available for purchase.

Saturday, December 12, 8 PM. (NTM Cultural Arts SIG trip to HSA&H event.) Holiday Sing Arts & Humanities at University of Texas at Dallas, University Theater. Contact Info: Art & Performance, 972-UTD-ARTS. Cultural Arts SIG invites everyone to join in UT Dallas' oldest continuous cultural tradition, a concert celebrating seasonal standards mixed with popular holiday melodies of the past four decades. Have you heard the "12 Days of Christmas" sung in 12 different musical styles? They usually conclude with the "Hallelujah Chorus." The performance features the UT Dallas Chamber Singers with help from the audience! A visit by Santa is always a highlight of the evening. Don't miss the Christmas goodies [cookies, punch, and hot wassail] at a reception following the concert, sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations. The warm drink (punch for the children) will warm you on your walk back to your car. Please note: The UT Dallas campus is undergoing a significant amount of construction. Guests are advised to visit the campus map for updated route, construction, and parking information. [For those of you who have gone with us in the past, the old route is still recommended: going north on I75 (Central Expressway) turning west (left) on Campbell; then right at the light at Floyd Road; There will be a major signed entrance to UTD on the left at Lookout Drive; turn left and park in either parking lot to the right and then walk towards the campus. A large campus map (right) and Green Bridge appear at the end of path. Cross the Green Bridge and prepare to walk between Green Hall and Green Center. The gap between Green Center (left) and Green Hall will lead you toward your destination. The path between the two buildings deposits pedestrians near
Spirit Rock, where the University Theatre comes into view (follow the crowd). Do come early for this one because it grows quickly to sitting on the aisle steps only. --Betty Jane.

Recommended by Ralf: Sunday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m.. Christmas service in German that is done each year at St. Paul's Evangelical & Reformed Church (United Church of Christ). Many of the members of the congregation have German ancestry and the Evangelical & Reformed denominational roots also go back to Germany. The service is a combination of singing in German by the choir and congregation and the reading of the Christmas story. The church is at 6464 E. Lovers Lane, Dallas, 75214. Sunday, December 6 at 7:00 PM. (NTM Cultural Arts SIG trip to Messiah Sing event.) Messiah Sing at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, 305 W. Broadway, Ft. You will have many opportunities to hear George Frederic Handel's immortal Messiah this Advent season, but The Broadway Series offers you the opportunity to join with the Chancel and Chapel Choirs and the Orchestra at Broadway in this annual free Christmas Messiah
Sing. Bring your own score or borrow one available in the Narthex. Everyone has been looking for a free nutcracker Messiah Sing in years past, and last year Broadway Baptist Church had one, with an orchestra. Car-pool anyone? After the Event: This was one of the best Messiah Sing-alongs I've ever attended. This was the church's 29th year to do this, and they have it down to a fine art. The church is very large and from the next to the last row, I could still make out the pastor, the excellent soloists and the fine choir. The large orchestra was a special treat. The hospitality of the church members was most notable--inside the foyer on several large folding tables they had many hundreds of copies of Schirmer's score for people to use gratis. (I had brought my worn copy with me.) All the parts of the score were either sung or narrated. We ended up with the "Hallelujah Chorus", followed by "Worthy is the Lamb." And, then, before we were dismissed, we were asked to sing the "Hallelujah Chorus" again. I'm so glad that I brought cough drops for the ride home. The next morning a radio station played the "Hallelujah Chorus" again and I had my Schirmer on the bedside table like a sugar plum, and I sang again. Can you hear me whispering this? :-) I'm looking forward to the next Messiah Sing on the 22nd here in Dallas. I think people have a little trouble singing it each time because they only sing it once a year, and, in my case, I will probably have to memorize it soon because of my aging vision. Now where is my Mormon Tabernacle Album so I can rehearse some more..

[Please contact me before 10:00 a.m. this morning for special ticket information, 12/5--Betty Jane] The Texas Ballet Company's production of The Nutcracker at the Winspear Opera House (the glowing red building on Flora in the Arts District). A holiday party, a mysterious guest, and a young girl's dream. Ring in the holiday season with Ben Stevenson's critically-acclaimed production of The Nutcracker. This beloved ballet tells the story of Clara and her magical Nutcracker Prince as they embark on a thrilling adventure. Along the way, they encounter a Christmas tree that grows to 40 feet, toy soldiers battling mischievous mice, waltzing flowers, dancing candy, and sparkling, swirling snowflakes that fall on dancers and the audience alike. Stunning costumes, dazzling sets and remarkable dancing to holiday music by Tchaikovsky make The Nutcracker a favorite family tradition. Prices vary. We will meet at 1:15 PM, before the show starts, to make plans on where to go afterward to talk about The Nutcracker and past Nutcrackers. After the Event: Lovely performance. The dancers floated. Seats were 10 rows back in the Grand Terrace--It is a slightly-elevated section on the side with seats turned slightly towards the stage. The settings and costumes were elegant. Unfortunately, taped music was used and has been used for several years now due to the economy. Fortunately, it was a good tape and didn't stop or crackle. Protestors outside made us remember how wonderful The Nutcracker is with live music. I remember one performance in which the nutcracker toy accidentally got thrown into the orchestra pit in the struggle. Everyone on stage and in the audience held their collective breath; then the musician who caught it, immediately popped it right back out onto the stage. A priceless moment.

The performers all did very well. How do you choose between your children in such an ensemble piece: party children and adults, the Arabian, Snow, Waltz of the Flowers, Mother Ginger, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, her brother, and on and on. If you haven't seen it yet, it is still showing in Ft. Worth.--bj
