American Cassandra: Deja Vu

Directed by Pam Myers-Morgan

Created by Rhonda Blair

With Meredith Alloway, Regina Bonifasi,
Kateri Cale and Mirela Selimovic

A Co-Production with
Southern Methodist University

It’s been four years since Echo “got political” with its hugely popular DREAMING AMERICA: IN THE BUNKER WITH GEORGE, and we’re at it again! In the tradition of the mythological Cassandra, Echo has been issuing theatrical warnings since 1999. Will we be heard - and heeded - this time?!?

If you're old enough to vote, you're old enough to see AMERICAN CASSANDRA!

  • Experience a LIVE WRR broadcast

It's an afternoon of art and music--May 4 from 2-4 p.m.

After the Event:  At 12:35 p.m., I took DART south from Arapaho Station to Mockingbird Station and then the Love Field bus (#539) down Mockingbird to Bishop on the UTD Campus, arriving at 1:00 p.m., and being 11 out of 30 to arrive for the 2:00 p.m. event, I received a card for a free goody bag.  They also had additional assorted goodies we could pick up.  I got a WRR yo-yo (no musical pun intended, for Heather, Gavin, and myself. (H had actually been in a film doing yo-yo tricks that was made at Odyssey (a Richland College gifted kids summer program back in '91 when she was in the 5th grade; so 16 1/2-month-old Gavin got his first yo-yo lesson on his rich pink yo-yo.  And there were many more goodies to share, including free tickets to the Meadows.:-)).  Later that evening I got a call saying I was also a grand prize winner of the $150 plus (The Kimbell added even more to the original package with free tickets to the upcoming Master Impressionists tickets) goody bag.  It was an embarrassment of riches.:-) I really love the two exhibition catalogues you gave me.  I opened up the goody bag at a Mensa East Dallas Lunch Bunch gathering and showed everyone what a treasure I had been given.

And then there was the live WRR broadcast as a part of the celebration of art and music with people who had contributed to bringing the Gallego exhibit and also a speaker from The Van Cliburn Foundation in anticipation of the upcoming Van Cliburn artist series and of the upcoming Van Cliburn competitions, which will again will be streamed live from the computer.  (To hear the complete 2005 competition, you can go to Cliburn.org, then to Broadcasts and Webcasts,  then to streaming videos.)

A piano concert was also a part of the event and when Gabriela Martinez.couldn't make it down from New York in time, the Van Cliburn Foundation sent us Jade Simmons, a wonderful pianist, who also happened to be Miss Illinois in 2000 and first-runnerup in the Miss America Contest.  She introduced each of the varied pieces and sent me off to learn more about sensethesia.  She played in the red room where Medieval Art is hung, which you can see on the Meadows website listed below.  A great venue that I hope they use for music again.

Before and after the concert, I visted the new exhibit:  Fernando Gallego and His Workshop:  The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo, which contains 26 panels visualizing Christian history from Creation to the Last Judgment. In addition to the wonderful paintings, part of the exhibition is the technical analysis of the paintings.  Fifteen full-sized infrared reflectogram mosaics are installed on light boxes, illuminating the artists' underdrawings for the first time. Fascinating.

The NTM Cultural Arts SIG will be scheduling an event in the M-Aura to see this exhibit on a free Thursday evening in June.(June 26th in fact from 4:45 PM to 9:00 PM--See the June M-Aura or online calendar for all the details).  (The Meadows will be doing a plaza renovation starting in the middle of May, requiring the temporary closure of their restaurant, The Gates, and the temporary sheathing of Calatrava's The Wave, which sits outside on the plaza.) And that's how  I finished up last Sunday, sitting on the plaza, watching The Wave undulate from different angles, enjoying the sunshine, and listening to the birds chirp.--betty jane

About the Exhibit:

The monumental altarpiece from the cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo by Fernando Gallego and Maestro Bartolomé is among the greatest artistic treasures created in medieval Iberia. Painted between 1480 and 1500 in the Castilian province of Salamanca, its 26 panels visualize Christian history from Creation to the Last Judgment. The work is now part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection at the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson. Since 2003, when the Meadows Museum initiated the altarpiece study, At the Meadows (Spring 2006 and Fall 2007) has kept our members abreast of the progress of this unprecedented undertaking, which involved close collaboration among scholars at the Kimbell Art Museum, the Getty Research Institute, and Madrid's Prado Museum. Last year the technical and art historical research concluded. This spring the Meadows Museum celebrates the project's culmination with a unique exhibition that features not only the paintings, but also the study. All 26 altarpiece panels are displayed on a curved wall in the central of the Jake and Nancy Hamon spaces. more

The Meadows Museum, a division of SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts , contains works from the 10th to the 21st century, including Spanish masterpieces by El Greco, Velázquez, Ribera, Murillo, Goya, Miró and Picasso . To learn more about the museum, go to www.meadowsmuseumdallas.org.
Museum hours are Tues.- Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thurs. until 8 p.m.; and Sun. 12 to 5 p.m. Free parking is available for museum visitors in the garage under the building.

For additional information contact Betty Jane Ferguson at 972-495-5252 or bookies@gte.net.

After the Concert:

Emilie has the most beautiful voice and the most beautiful songs!  She also plays the guitar exquisitely.  Her songs are filled with passion and wisdom and wit and insights.  She is known as the Queen of Folksingers, an homage quite deserved. To hear her play for two hours was pure pleasure.  Uncle Calvin's tries to chose non-local talent as much as possible to widen its scope, but Emilie has been invited back twice a year for the last 25 years, making her the all-time most heard performer, and the audience would have it no other way.  In about six months you will have another chance to see her, unless you can get on her mailing list (see paragraph above) and catch her somewhere else in the interim. It was good to share this special concert with other NTM people. Bill enlightened us about house concerts and we will be going to one later on this month as a Culture Arts SIG offering. --bj

THE PROGRAM has been curated by Charles Dee Mitchell, a Dallas-based art writer, and Carolyn Sortor, an artist and long-time supporter of the Video Association of Dallas.  In the summer of 2007, Ms. Sortor worked with Danette Dufilho of Conduit Gallery and assembled a series of video art programs drawn from the archives of the Video Association.  "The turnout for those programs," she reports, "confirmed that we have reached a tipping-point for public interest in video as an art medium."

"THE PROGRAM will include area premieres for many artists well known on the international circuit," says Mr. Mitchell. "Whether they work at their kitchen tables, on a laptop, or use the crews, casts, and locations associated with feature filmmaking, these artists are producing narrative projects that are both challenging and entertaining."

In addition to the exhibitions at Conduit Gallery, THE PROGRAM will offer free screenings at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell Street, on August 5th and 12th at 7 p.m.  And on August 10, the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 North Harwood, will host a free panel discussion with screening at 1:30pm in their Center for Creative Connections.
Each week we will issue an email featuring selected titles/installations on exhibit for the following week.

Metropolitan Opera Series
The First Emperor, Jan. 13

The world-premiere broadcast of Chinese composer Tan Dun’s epic opera, The First Emperor, features the legendary tenor Plácido Domingo as Emperor Qin, who built the Great Wall and gave China its name. Tan Dun’s music is a fascinating mix of East and West, and the monumental production is staged by revered Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern and House of Flying Daggers), with costumes by Oscar-winning designer Emi Wada (Kurosawa’s Ran).

Eugene Onegin, Feb. 24

The beloved American soprano Renée Fleming joins Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky for this broadcast of Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous and lyrical Eugene Onegin. The sweeping dramatic arc of this opera—youthful longing, rejection, regret, a desperate plea that comes too late—is perfectly mirrored in Tchaikovsky’s achingly beautiful music and in the stunning lighting of this strikingly minimal production.

The Barber of Seville (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Mar. 24

The instantly familiar music of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) has been featured in cartoons, commercials, and TV shows galore, but it’s best heard in its original form, where its infectious charm and bubbling joy are given free reign. In the Met’s new production, by acclaimed theater director Bartlett Sher and his Tony Award-winning team from The Light in the Piazza, the dashing young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez proves why he is one of the world’s greatest Rossini singers, in his calling-card role of Count Almaviva.

Il Trittico, Apr. 28

Jealousy, murder, suicide, religious rapture, intrigue, young love! No, it isn’t a soap opera— it’s Puccini’s triple-bill of one-act operas, Il Trittico. This gripping new production by Broadway luminary (and Tony Award-winner) Jack O’Brien and a team of leading theater designers showcases the amazing technical resources of the Met stage as well as a brilliant ensemble cast, not to mention Puccini at his most hauntingly lyrical and dramatic. The Met’s celebrated music director, James Levine, conducts.

Nasher 3rd Thursday Evening in the Center, February 15

5:00 pm.  NTM Cultural Arts SIG Returns to the Nasher Sculpture Center for the Free 3rd Thursday Evenings in the Center with Salon (speaker from The Dallas Morning News and topic to be determined, but will have something to do with Urban Living).
The Nasher just announced that the Salon at the free Nasher event tomorrow starting at 5:00 p.m. (the sky space at the back of the garden is most beautiful at sunset) and then there is all the sculpture inside when night falls, or earlier if the weather dictates.  The Salon will start at 7:30 p.m. and is usually an open free event presented by people from the Dallas Morning News.  Tonight is different as it will be a reservation-only salon because it will include a free wine tasting of the wines from Matisse's southwest region of France.

In addition to the wine there will be a panel with Cathy Barber, The Dallas Morning News Taste Editor; Rebecca Murphy, Special Contributor and Chairman of The Dallas Morning News Wine Competition; and Glenn Verk, Central Market Wine Expert, moderated by Tom Maurstad, The DMN Pop Culture Critic.

Knowing tastings are very popular with North Texas Mensans, I reserved 10 places for the event tomorrow; 3 of which are already gone.

Anyone wanting to go should phone me at (972) 495-5256 (voicemail is ok, but wait for my phone call back for confirmation) or bookies@gte.net (again, I will respond to confirm your place as there are only seven spaces left and they will go quickly).

In addition,

Triple Museum Third Thursdays will be going on tonight.

Two museums and a galleries collection share the corner of Flora and Harwood.  The Nasher will be open from 5:00 p.m. till 11:00 and completely free.  The Dallas Museum of Art will be open from 6:00 p.m.till 9:00 and the general admission is free (this means the Matisse Exhibition is excluded), and it has great jazz every Thursday.  Also the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, found at crowcollection.org and always free will be open till 9:00 p.m.

I recommend we go together to get one of the various tapas plates for $12, if you like.  It easily feeds 2-3 people and is prepared by Wolfgang Puck Catering.  Delicious!  Mensa76ers, please join us.  RSVP, if you like, so I can look for you, to Betty Jane Ferguson, Cultural Arts SIG, at (972) 495-5256 or bookies@gte.net.  I'll be wearing a blue NTM Mensa Volunteers t-shirt. (I like that "Volunteers" is both a noun and a verb.)

Arts District Stroll and Together in the Center at the Nasher, Saturday, February 3, 2007

10:00 am. NTM Cultural Arts SIG Dallas Arts District Stroll and Nasher Sculpture Center Together in the Center Visit to See the Matisse - Painter as Sculptor Exhibition for North Texas Mensa members.
Join us at 10:00 am. in front of the Trammel and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, 2010 Flora St., in Dallas (MAPSCO 45-K), just east of the DMA. Take 75 south downtown to the Ross exit.  Turn right on Ross, and turn right on Olive at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  Look for parking on the street around the area; there is a parking lot charging $6.50 for the day on Olive right next to the Nasher on Flora.  The Friends of the Arts District will be giving a free gentle, slow-paced, stop-and-talk tour of the Arts District from 10:30-11:30ish,  (If you get there right at 10:00 we can see part of the Crow collection first, especially their jade carvings and the top floor, which has recreations of shrines and even the whole wall of a house.)  Then we'll all leave for the Arts District Stroll to see just what is going on in the Arts District expansion. After the stroll, we will walk right across the street to the Nasher Sculpture Center which does not charge admission till noon and is free till 3:30 pm. on the first Saturday of every month.  The new exhibition is Matisse - Painter as Sculptor, plus you'll see sculptures from other artists all over the garden and inside the center. (The Nasher and the Dallas Museum of Art are both featuring the works of Matisse now.)   The Nasher also has a tour at noon and all sorts of activities in the garden--even yoga.  So join us for the morning and afternoon, or for any part of it.  I'll be wearing a blue and white NTM Mensa Volunteers t-shirt. You can bring water and snacks or use the restaurant (Wolfgang Puck Catering) in the Nasher.  Let's get some art and do the stroll together!  RSVP, if you'd like, and I'll look for you, to Betty Jane Ferguson, Culture Arts SIG, at (972) 495-5256 (24/7) or bookies@gte.net.  We're also hoping to be joined by some of our friends from of Mensa76.

Simply New Media presents a four-part lecture series focusing on artists who use digital manipulation to create works of art. Each artist brings a unique perspective to approach digital art. This series aims to create a solid definition of digital art in the North Texas region while educating the Dallas arts community by highlighting the importance and legitimacy of all areas of digital art and hopefully answering questions about this relatively new media. Each lecture will take place at a different location around the Dallas area, and the lectures are free to the public. There will also be a reception at 6:00pm before the lecture at 6:30pm and a short question and answer period immediately following each lecture. For more information, call (214) 491-0389 or send an email to simplynewmedia@plumgauche.com.
