Background of
Sammy's Place
- Welcome to Sammy's
Place. Who is Sammy? Sammy is a sweet little basset, a 72 pound hunk of
burning love who scoped out deer and armadillos from his various window vantage
points in Tallahassee. Sammy left
this earth for the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 13. We miss him dearly. He was a sweet little guy in a little brown fur coat.
- Speaking of
Tally, some tongue in cheek
opportunities for entrepreneurs in Tallahassee
- Remember: "Every
home page should try to be complete on something, if it were only a listing
of Florida school districts who have listed job opportunities on the Web."
(paraphrase of Holmes).
- No particular
order of district names. Starts with districts who got on first on the web
with job postings...namely Pasco County.
- In my 27 years
in Pasco County, Florida, I worked eight years as a teacher, three years as
an assistant principal, six years as a supervisor of instructional computing,
and then ten years as Director of Information Services for Pasco County from
1987 - 1997.
- I set up this
personal web site of educational job related files in Pasco County in March
1995. Due to many requests from visitors to that site, additional links have
been collected. There is no intent to endorse the services of any particular
site or agency.
- Took advantage
of a great retirement from Pasco - moved to Tallahassee, Florida in July 1997,
and returned to graduate school in Educational Leadership in the Ph.D. program
at the College of Education at The Florida State University.
- Like a hermit
crab, I moved this education site to Tallahassee with me.
- After I completed
my classes in the Ph.D. program I took a position at the Florida Department
of Education during 2000 as Program Director Distance Learning. Being one
of those rare individuals who cannot work full time and write a dissertation
at the same time, I resigned in November 2000 to complete my dissertation.
- I completed
my Ph.D. program at FSU in December 2001 and now work for the Florida
Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS) as a Consultant
for Technical Services.
- Read the fine
print in the ads, such as application procedures and employment filing instructions:)
- I am not a Career
Specialist -- they won't even let me play one on TV -- but remember: when
it comes to job hunting, you are in the driver's seat. Unless you have an
understanding mentor, no one else is looking out for your interests.
- So what are
you waiting for? Update your professional skills. Do some reading, study,
and sharpen your saw, as Covey would say. Polish your resume and as well as
your interviewing skills. Get to know people. OK, let's get real: get to know
the 'right' people. Don't be shy. Some jobs may be 'wired' - but it doesn't
hurt to get your name out there. Remember that in the USA, eye contact is
a must during job interviews.
- Good luck in
your job search. Let me hear from you - and let me know if you found success - or if the listings need to be updated. Remember, your names are never displayed on Sammy's Place.
