    Overview...

    On Saturday, July 18th, the Coalition of Minority Policy Professionals (CoMPP) in conjunction with the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management and The Georgetown Public Policy Institute sponsored: "The Second Sloan, Woodrow Wilson Public Policy and International Affairs National Conference." A follow-up to the 1996 CoMPP Conference, the all-day conference focused upon the theme of: "Preparing Communities of Color for the 21st Century: Next Steps, New Challenges & Strategies."

    Hosted by the Graduate School of Public Affairs, the conference was held at the University of Maryland at College Park. Special assistance was provided in organizing the conference from the Academy for Educational Development's PPIA Program, Emerging Leadership Institute , and the National Congress for Community Economic Development.

    The capstone of the day's activities, the Town Hall Forum allowed conference participants to discuss obstacles and potential strategies on how "they" as policy professionals and students of color could foster change in our respective communities.

    Welfare Reform How is welfare reform impacting minority communities? Are welfare to work programs helping communities of color to help themselves?
    Education How can charter schools and vouchers benefits communities of color? Are new approaches to teaching and learning in minority communities working?
    Community & Economic Development What are the latest trends in community and economic development? What are the tools for neighborhood commercial revitalization?
    International Affairs Does free trade impact domestic economic inequality? How does immigration affect U.S. foreign policy?
    Politics & Media Is the media accurately portraying the state of minority communities across the country? How do media images affect policymaking?
    Technology Can new tools be effectively used for old problems? Are minority communities being left behind on the "Information Superhighway?"
    Young Professionals Roundtable Sponsored by the Emerging Leadership Institute,this afternoon only Discussion Group will allow young professionals of color to engage in a frank and practical discussion about the challenges of pursuing a career in public policy. Topics which may be discussed include networking and public-private sector career transitions.
