The 271st ASHC arrivied at Can Tho RVN 26 February 1968. The unit was formed at Ft. Benning Georgia as the 271st ASHC with the 361st Maintenance Company attached. It deployed to Vietnam via the USS Upshur arriving first at Vung Tau. The unit stayed in Vung Tau while the hooks were made flyable. The first hook to fly from Vung Tau to Can Tho was aircraft tail #126. The 271st was the first Chinook company to call the Mekong Delta home. The company consisted of 16 CH-47B aircraft. It was the only Hook unit in Vietnam to include an organic LOH "Loach " platoon, the "BARTENDERS" .
