THE SACRED BLOSSOM - THE ROSE
By Patricia Darrow, Astrologer
The rose (Rosa species) has been a prominent flower in Western mysticism for many centuries. Mentioned in the bible, the rose was considered to be a symbol of wisdom. Some scholars feel that the rose mentioned in the bible was not a true rose, but different varieties of flowers, such as the oleander and red tulip.
In portrayals of Christian saints such as St. Therese de Liseaux and St. Rose of Lima, roses are always included. The Litany of Loreto, Jesus’ mother, Mary, is honored as the "Mystical Rose". When Mary appeared to Juan Diego, the miracle she performed was to cause Castilian roses to bloom in mid-winter. This appearance of Mary is honored as Our Lady of Guadelupe of Mexico.
Fragrant water from the petals of the rose is used in the rites of the Eastern Orthodox church during Good Friday rites and in consecrating an altar.
The rose is a prominent symbol of several mystical groups; the Rosicrucians and the Rosicrucian Fellowship. The symbol of the Rosicrucian order is a cross with a single, half-blown, ruby red rose at the crux. Rather than being a religious symbol, this is considered to describe an individual’s development through life’s lessons (karma) and the gradual spiritual unfoldment of the soul (evolution). Other Rosicrucian organizations portray the cross with a garland of roses upon it.
Bible verses mentioning the rose: Ecclesiasticus 39:13; Isaiah 35:1; Song of Solomon 2:1; and Ecclesiasticus 24:14 .
The scent of a rose is used extensively, today, in aromatherapy for candles, oils, incense, and perfumes. It is also incorporated in rituals for love or beauty. It blends well when used with a Rose Quartz crystal.
This flower is probably the most popular sent by florists; especially during the Valentine’s Day season. Many people think that the rose is synonymous with love. Some may think of it as a metaphor for eternity… "a rose is a rose is a rose". Others may link it with immortality… "he aROSE from the dead.
In closing, let me add that the rose is also depicted in the Rider-Waite tarot deck in many cards in various colors. What does this beautiful blossom symbolize to you?
