THE TENTH HOUSE: CLIMBING MOUNTAINS
By Patricia Darrow, Astrologer
As your mind opens to spiritual laws and teachings, you need to apply what you learn in a pragmatic and businesslike manner. To accomplish this, study your 10th house to see how your attitudes affect your career. Attitudes needed for success, in any endeavor are self-discipline, responsibility and self-control.
This tenth house is an angular house also known as the Midheaven, which is like the "roof" of your house. This house describes your career, reputation and social status - the public knowledge about you. It also describes your vocation and your life’s work; your "calling" in life. This house also governs authority figures such as your father, employers, teachers and older people in general. Add to this the field of worldly attainment, how people are remembered, prestige, fame, affairs of the State, large-scale organizations and social contributions.
The tenth house resonates to the zodiac sign of Capricorn and the planet of Saturn. It has been linked with the Tarot cards of the Devil, the World, the 10 of Pentacles and sometimes the 10 of Wands. In Numerology, it is closely related with the number of 8 for power and success.
Much insight of the tenth house can be gleaned from the following books written about Saturn, it’s ruling planet:
"Saturn In Transit" by Erin Sullivan
"The Saturn Return" by Nancy Ehresman & Stephen Albaugh
"Transit of Saturn: Critical Ages In Adult Life" by Marc Robertson
"The Saturn/Pluto Phenomenon" by Joy Michaud & Karen Hilverson
"The Book of Saturn" by Zipporah Dobyns, Ph.D.
"The Twelve Faces of Saturn" by Bill Tierney
"Saturn" A New Look at the Old Devil" by Liz Greene
Beyond power and ordinary success, the tenth house has to do with success at the spiritual level - assumption of full responsibility for oneself and the experiences of growing up as an individual. (Please see my article on "Responsibility"). The mountain is associated with the 10th house - it is a metaphor for ascension of the mind!
Here are some pearls of wisdom from a certain Sagittarius with a stellium in the 10th house. Don’t worry about honor and recognition as these benefits come with the territory. Grow up, value time and discipline the self. Strive to be the best you can be.
Work to develop the abilities and the career will take shape.
Climb the mountain. The view is so much clearer from the top.
