Scientific Hatcheries is a high technology recycle fish hatchery producing both fresh water and marine products. The hatchery is located in a typical industrial building and uses very little replacement water which means that this type of hatchery can be located in any location that is convenient. As a business we have several different activities. The main income and effort is producing live aquatic products with feeder guppies being the major item and zebra danio's being the second largest product. We presently produce and sell about 20,000,000 fish per year. Most of the live product goes to either the ornamental fish markets or the research markets.

Zebrafish for both the hobby and research markets are major part of our business. We can provide staged embryos, larva or adult breeders for the zebra fish reasearch community. For researchers please consult our Availability List.

Zebrafish researchers may find the recent power point presentation on "Optimization of Zebra Danio Performance" at the American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS) San Antonio meeting of interest. Tapes of the presentation are available from AALAS.

A presentation of "Advances in Zebra Danio Spawning, Embryo Development and Larval Rearing Technology " was made at the Aquaculture 2003 meeting in Louisville. Files of this power point presentation are available along with the other zebra presentations on the Aquacultuer Engineering web site.

We are starting a new set of files called Zebra Notes where we cover several subjects of interest to the research community.

ZebraFish Notes:

  1. The question of how to unpack a shipment of live fish is a common question and can be very critical. In a PDF format.
  2. The startup of a new system. In PDF Format.
  3. Developing and hatching large numbers of embryos
  4. Improving development time with live foods (egg to egg in < 50 days).
  5. Diets and egg viablility.

System Design:

Another area of interest for Scientific Hatcheries is related to water treatment system design. We have developed the technology for Fluidized Bed Biofilters for our own use and manufacture by Aquaneering Inc . Some performance data on fine media fluidized bed systems.

Aquaneering also produces the feeders, suction skimmers, lime feeders, and other systems designed and tested by Scientific Hatcheries. We have also developed a bacterial strain and bioreactor for removing MTBE from water at concentrations in the 2 ppb range. We can get > 99.9% removal of MTBE in a single pass through the reactor with the only waste products being CO2 and water. In the MTBE work, Aquaneering Inc. builds the skid mounted bioreactors and Scientific Hatcheries cultures the media for the bioreactors. This allows instant startup even when dealing with very slow growing bacteria such as thoes who metabolize MTBE.

Consulting:

Scientific Hatcheries is involved in various consulting activities ranging from specific testing to system design. Reference for a CV of Dr. Weaver. Most of the consulting activity revolves around question of system design and water quality as they relate to aquacutlure or water treatement systems.

System Design:

For readers interested in system design, the linked pdf file is a power point presentation that provides the definitions of concepts like Loop Strength and the relationships between substrate concentration and reaction rate for ammonia and other pullutants. This presentation was made at the 2002 California Aquaculture Association (CAA) meeting in San Diego as part of the Aqua2002 Meeting of the WAS. High Water Quality Systems.

For my views about the risk analysis associated with the importation of Ornamental Fish.
