Definitions

Artifact: Any object created or modified by humans.

Culture: The shared beliefs, behaviors, ideas and institutions aquired by people as members of society.

Culture Shock: Psychological disorientation and stress arising from a society whose cultural patters are distinct from one's own.

Cognitive paterns: Styles of organizing information and beliefs peculiar to a particular cultural tradition.

Ethnoarchaeology: The archaeological study of contemporary peoples. Ethnoarchaeology often focuses particularly on the behavior patterns responsible for creating physical objects and their spacial distribution.

Ethnography: The recording and description of the lifeways of a people.

Ethnohistory: The study of a cultures past through the personal reminiscences of its members, historical records and other sources.

Participant observation: The study of behavior where the observer participates directly in the social life of the group under study. Also known as the Emic Approach.
