The obelisk that stands in the middle  of Romero Park is a tribute to the priest Francisco Romero, a great promoter of coffee growing in Santander. Behind can be seen the age-old mangoes that provide shade for some of the city's most representative architectural landmarks, such as the old Central Cemetery and San Juan de Dios Hospital
In the early years of the present century, the Franciscan community built a church along Gothic lines, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, which has given its name to one of the city's larger districts. It stands opposite Camacho Carreño Park
