The Raden Observatory
On June 24, 1993, astronomers across the land suffered a great
loss with the passing of David J. Raden. He was a speaker at a multitude
of events and a recognized figure at national parties such as The Winter
Keys Star Party, Astronomical League conventions, Riverside, and Stellafane.
He was a member of the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club, the Southern Cross
Astronomical Society of Miami, the Local Group of Bradenton, the Central
Florida Astronomical Society of Orlando, and the old Tampa Amateur Astronomical
Association.
Dave moved to his rural Ft. Meade property 30 years ago to escape the light
pollution of Winter Haven, where he built his own observatory and many fine
telescopes. His observatory was always open to visitors and enthusiasts.
Dave Raden was very good to the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club with his many
presentations and monthly phone calls. He will surely be missed by us all.
He left his observatory and 14.5" telescope to the St. Petersburg Astronomy
Club and provided the funds for its relocation from Ft. Meade to Hickory
Hill, a very generous bequeathment to our organization. We will remember
him each time we use the beautiful observatory.
Here is a pictorial history of various dedicated members breaking ground,
pouring the slab, moving the scope from Ft. Meade to Hickory Hill, installing
the scope, the completed dome and scope, and enjoying Hickory Hill.
My apology to any member not pictured. Photographs of all the dedicated
workers, that made this year long project a success, were not available.
