Jerome M. Stewart, AKC, AHBA Herding Test & Trial Judge



Jerry has been involved in the sport of herding since 1986 when he acquired his first Shetland Sheepdog, WTCH Stewart's Easy Storm, UD, HX, PC, HC, HTD-III. He has been teaching all-breed herding classes since 1988, and currently teaches three classes per week in Southern California. In addition he offers clinics each year throughout the United States, and has given numerous lectures on the sport of herding. He organizes and puts on demonstrations so the general public can see herding dogs in action.

Jerry has been successful at the advanced level in AKC, AHBA, ASCA and ISDS trials with his Shetland Sheepdog, Easy and his Border Collies, Tess and Choice. He has earned the WTCH title with three different breeds of dogs, Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and Border Collie. being the first trainer to get the WTCH with an AKC registered dog and also holds the distinction of being the trainer of the first AKC herding dog to have the UD, and HX titles.

His students  have finished over twenty herding championships ,  and several have become licensed herding judges. Jerry is an AKC and AHBA judge, licensed to judge all breeds in the trial and test classes.

Jerry's articles on the sport of herding have appeared in several publications including the Sheltie Pacesetter, Working Border Collie Magazine, Sheltie International, AHBA Newsletter, SDCSDC Newsletter, Wag-N-Tales, OCOC Barker, Pet Trader, The Herdsman and Sheltie Show Off. Since 1990 he has written a monthly Newsletter for his students. The Class Newsletter has quite a reputation in Southern California and can be read by clicking the link in the table of contents page. Jerry has been awarded a Maxwell Award for Photography from the Dog Writers' Association. Jerry and Easy were featured on the cable television program Paw Prints (linked to below) and most recently The Dog Whisper. He and his classmates have been covered by CNN and OCN. Jerry and his dogs have been the subject of many published articles, including a feature on the front page of the Orange County Register's Metro section, LA Times and others.

He has handled Border Collies, Rough Collies, Briards, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Australian Shepherds, English Shepherd, Bearded Collies, Samoyeds, Australian Cattle Dogs, German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Tervuren, Bouvier des Flandres, Standard Poodle, Finnish Lapphund and Lhasa Apsos at herding events on a professional basis.
