FIELD
TRIPS AT THE S.E.A. LABORATORY
We
offer FREE, hands-on, educational
activities for all ages,
including:
Touring
our facility: Our staff will lead your
students on an exciting tour of all our
sea creatures, including lobsters,
octopuses, and sharks! In addition,
students can also tour our white sea bass
and halibut hatcheries. Students should
have:
CLOSE-TOED
SHOES
NAME
TAGS
AND
LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!!
Exploring
the beach: Since the beach is only 1
block away, students can easily
participate in digging for sand animals.
Our staff will point out all the
components important to beach habitats.
Students will get to see where storm
drains empty onto the beach and discuss
water pollution issues. If you plan on
getting wet (which we encourage!), please
bring a towel and change of
clothes.
Catching
plankton: We will provide nets to
catch microscopic plants and animals and
then instruct your students how to use our
microscopes for up-close and personal
viewing!
In
addition, here are more great things to do
during your visit:
Schedule
a classroom activity: If the tour,
beach, and plankton activities are not
enough, we also have a wide array of
educational programs that can be presented
at the S.E.A. Laboratory, as well as at
your school.
Tour
an electric power plant: Right across
the street is the AES Power Plant and
students can take part in a 30 minute
tour. They will learn how we can use steam
to produce electricity and how the sea
water is used to cool this steam back to a
liquid.
Eat
Lunch! We have a beautiful and private
tidepool area perfect for an
after-activity lunch!
