S.E.A.
Laboratory Education Intern
DESCRIPTION
The S.E.A. Laboratory is currently seeking applicants for the year of 2003-04. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to serve their community while earning a living allowance. Education Interns at S.E.A. Laboratory are currently offered a living allowance of at least $1083 per month. As Education Interns, upon successful completion of 1700 hours of service, members will receive an education award of $4725 from the Corporation for National Service through participation in the Los Angeles Conservation Corps' Partners in Service program. Education Interns will be responsible for working with the Coordinator and the Director on developing and presenting a marine science education program for elementary, middle and high school students in the Los Angeles County area. Interns may also be asked to take on additional projects, as may be assigned, throughout the course of the year. Interns are encouraged to continue their education while participating in the program. Interns may work along with visiting and resident scientists on site to learn laboratory and field skills that may be used in future career work in the environmental industry. The normal workweek will usually be Tuesdays through Saturdays. Interns will also be expected to be able to work varying work schedules that may include working occasionally on Sundays with advance notice.
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Presenting Educational Programs:
Interns will be responsible for presenting marine science and
environmental educational programs for young people (grades
K-12) both on and off site. Classes include, but are not limited
to the marine environment, its ecology and environmental careers,
water sampling and monitoring techniques, and the connection
between the urban-ocean environments. Interns also assist with
on site tours in conjunction with the Public Outreach Program
of the AES Power Generation Plant.
Program Implementation:
Interns are responsible for confirming class presentations,
tracking and encouraging student participation, compile program
evaluations and will also compile other data necessary for monthly
reports.
Communication:
Interns should be proficient in writing and speaking the English
language. Public speaking is a major part of our program. Written
reports regarding progress in attaining program objectives will
be required on a monthly basis. Bilingual abilities are an advantage
but are not required.
Project Development:
Education Interns MUST develop at least one community service
project during their service year. They may also be required
to participate in 3 major service projects for National Service
and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Interns are also expected to
recruit volunteers of all ages, from the targeted communities,
to participate in these events.
Maintenance:
Education Interns assist in providing maintenance of aquaria,
exhibits, the facility and equipment.

model for students
6. Willing and able to attend various training conferences &
other trips as required
7. ABLE TO GET TO WORK ON TIME AND CONSISTENTLY - our location
is in Redondo Beach, CA.
8. Ability to swim is preferred but not required.

REQUIRED
EXPERIENCE
· Minimum of 6 months experience in a Corps, youth program or
in the environmental sciences
· Must have a GED or a High School diploma, some college experience
preferred
· Willing and able to commit to a one year time period; work
hours usually 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
