winme defrag is faster than win 9X defrag...

and can replace win 9X defrag.

You will use the new winme defrag.exe to replace your current defrag.exe -

  • Rename your current defrag.exe to oldefrag.exe (it's located in the c:\windows directory),
  • Download the winme defrag.exe
  • then move the winme defrag.exe into the c:\windows directory.

The file is called "newdefrag.zip", so it'll need to be unzipped, then read the "read me" file for instructions.

Here are a couple of places to get:
    ...wimme defrag

And here's another page with instructions and comment:
Use The Improved WinME Defrag Utility in Win9x

    And another at wilders.org: http://www.wilders.org/downloads.htm
You have to scroll down a bit to get to the link.

    Example With "old" defrag:
    "Maintenance-Defragment programs.job" (DEFRAG.EXE)
    Started 11/27/01 1:01:04 AM
    Finished 11/27/01 1:33:24 AM
Result: Completed successfully(0). (elapsed time 32:20 min)

    With "new" Win ME defrag:
    "Maintenance-Defragment programs.job" (DEFRAG.EXE)
    Started 12/4/01 1:00:53 AM
    Finished 12/4/01 1:18:46 AM
Result: Completed successfully(0). (elapsed time 17:53 min)

A nearly 50% savings in execution time for the same disk and file quantity.
