Where can I make the change for the desktop icon refresh rate?
by tride on May-04-02 at 19:02
Here's a fix:
If you're having problems with Desktop icons (or the icons in Control Panel) constantly refreshing themselves, you need to increase the cache size for your icons:
1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \explorer
3. Right-click an empty space in the right pane Select New > String Value
4. Name the new value Max Cached Icons
5. Double-click on the Max Cached Icons string and enter a value of 2000 (The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 2000. The default value is 500)
6. Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows
P.S. it could take up to 3 restarts before this fix "takes".
A: Tride Yes!!! that is the one I used on this computer... thank you

Q: How Do I Restore Win98SE Default Image Viewers?
A: If your system's ability to open a particular type of file somehow breaks, the easiest way
to fix it is to click the document icon (to hilite), then right-click while holding the Shift key.
Select "Open With..." from the pop-up menu and choose the application you want to open it
with. Click "Always open with this application" to make the selection permanent.
And here's another way that will bypass all those key strokes:
It's always a good idea to back up your registry before attempting any changes.
If a program changes the registry so that IE is no longer the default viewer for JPEG, GIF
or other files, it is easy to change it back. Here's how (using JPEG as an example):
1) Start RegEdit
2) Press F3 and search for JPG
3) Modify first value to say "jpegfile" (without the quotes).
4) Modify the second value to say "image/jpeg."
5) Quit RegEdit.
6) Test IE by double-clicking a JPG.
Repeat for GIF if desired, using "giffile" and
"image/gif" designations in steps 3 and 4, respectively.

What's the site that tells you what programs you can remove from the start menu?
by *bay* on Apr-30-02 at 09:17
Go to start run and type in msconfig then click the start up tab ...uncheck those that you wan't to stop from starting up; click apply and restart your PC.
Here's a couple of sites that list the abbreviations of programs that may be starting up. If you can't find one there, do a google.com search on it.....

Here's the "read-me" text for the "wipeout" program on that site (no second chances!):
WARNING
The use of WIPEOUT can and will result in the loss of ALL data on your hard drive.
DIRECTIONS
1- Unzip file
2- Copy WIPEOUT to a Win9x boot disk
3- Boot with Win9x disk
4- At the A:\> type "wipeout c: /nq /np" (no quotes)
/nq = no queries - you will not be asked if you are sure.
/np = no partitions - this will overwrite the MBR
by jmpnthfire on Apr-30-02 at 14:15
solo, I owe ya one. I found an old 2.5 gig hdd in the garage office and it had several (!) really bad boot files. I Tried everything to get that sucker to format, but it wouldn't. That "Wipeout" proggy you mentioned took about 30 seconds, and now the hard drive's eatin-up Win98SE no problems at all.

Is there anyway to minimize SPAM emails?
by thehobbit on Apr-30-02 at 11:12
Brightmail.com has developed a package that filters email and separates "spam" into a separate folder. The package is in use by several different ISPs. Several "different companies - AT&T WorldNet, Critical Path, Verizon, and Earthlink - have used Brightmail to fundamentally improve their email management."
So, by choosing an ISP that uses a filter, you can greatly reduce the junk email that is sent to you. It means moving to an ISP that uses a filter.

I am using www.kazaa.com. It works pretty good for music downloads . Not as good as napster was but I can pull about any song I want.

Well so much for that...just found this on the web:
I downloaded Ad Aware, found some existing spyware in my system, and removed it. Next, I downloaded and installed Kazaa. Re-running Ad Aware showed that a spyware DLL called cd_clint.dll (Cydoor) was present in my \Windows\system32 folder (under XP). I told Ad Aware to delete the file.
After this, Kazaa refused to start up, saying a component was missing. I reinstalled Kazaa, got it working again, and again Ad Aware found cd_clint.dll in my system.
I use AudioGalaxy, primarily. AG will pass the Ad-Aware test. During installation, just deselect Gator, they don't try to hide it.

Consider ditching IM and find a program called Trillian.
It does 4 of the most popular "chat" programs in one.
Trillian combines the functionality of four popular instant messengers.
(Originator) http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/index.html
Also, a review & D/L from: http://www.rocketdownload.com/Details/Inst/7095.htm
Q: I have ICQ and MSN. Do I need to dump them before I download Trillian?
A: You don't have to get rid of either to download or use Trillian. If you remove them, trillian can't import your lists.
by nick_danger_3rd_eye on Aug-22-02 at 21:34
I can live without any of those IM programs. I last turned it on at the request of a chat boarder that wanted to know whether or not his own AIM was working. The program I linked is also linked on the Pacs-portal startup items page, and seems to work fine without any adverse effects. http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

I just found this article about About Common spyware; programs, makers and distributors of spyware.
Alexa, zBubbles
-Check your "Tools"-menu in Internet Explorer, if you find an option that says "Show related links" or similar then Alexa is watching you.
Alexa and zBubbles log searchstrings and addresses for pages you visit. Alexa comes with Internet Explorer if you do not explicitly deselecet it.
Click here to learn about a rather simple solution; how to edit the HOST-file in your computer in order to block unnecessary servers like Doubleclick etc.
Another recommended program is BHO-Cop, which helps tracking so called "browser helper objects". BHOs are add-ons to Internet Explorer, in theory the idea is quite useful but mostly BHOs are used for nothing else than spyware. This is because if a spyware uses a BHO it can leak information about you via your browser, therefore avoiding getting halted by your computer's firewall (I really hope you
are using a firewall!). To permanently disable some BHOs you can (at your own risk) remove the IEhelper.dll file found in the
Windows/system-folder from time to time.

Run Empty Temp Folders 2.8.3 and set it up to 'clear' your cache, cookies, temp files, temp. internet files, urls, etc every 10 or 15 minutes.
