Empty the Temp Folder Automatically

You can safely remove anything in C:\Windows\Temp that was created before the current Windows session. So the best time to have it automatically emptied is during boot-up. Here's how to do that:

Select Start, Run, type the command sysedit and press Enter to launch the System Configuration Editor. Once there, go to the autoexec.bat window. That batch file may contain text, or it may be blank. Either way, add these two lines:

deltree /y c:\windows\temp

md c:\windows\temp

Save the file and exit the program or click on the X to close. When asked if you want to save changes, click Yes. Next time you restart the temp files will be deleted. The cookies will not. That takes a whole diff. command line.

From now on, you'll get an empty temp folder every time you boot.

by soundgod on Jul-23-02 at 10:29
Good tip for those that shut down and re boot regularly. However .. for those like myself that maybe reboot once a week and are up and on 24/7 there is EmptyTemp, which will do it automatically while you are on line. See: http://www.danish-shareware.dk/soft/emptemp/

[You must configure EmpTemp - It can delete or save anything you want. Google EmpTemp and you will see several good tutorials if you don't like the program's Help file.]

[Ed. - I have my IE browser set to clear the Temp files each time I restart IE. In IE, go to Tools> Internet Options. In the General tab, in the middle for 'Temporary Internet Files', click settings and check "Every time you start IE" for the setting about when to 'Check for newer versions of stored pages'. Then click OK]

I have to keep reinstalling software to get my scanner to work.

by xyste
1 Unplug scanner power cord and the (serial, parallel, or USB) port cable.
2 Uninstall your scanner software using the uninstall program in that folder.
3 If it's a HP scanner go to Start/Find and type in HP and delete all. (if you have another HP peripheral, like a printer, try not to delete those but if you do, by mistake, just reinstall the printer software and drivers after you have the scanner working.) Otherwise, do a Find on your scanner's make and delete all.
4 Start/Find and type in twain and delete all.
5 Start/Find and type in twunk and delete all.
6 In Device Manager Remove anything with yellow splat or red X.
7 Shut down with all power off.
8 Replace plugs.
9 Boot.
10 Put scanner CD in drive and run setup.
11 Remove CD and restart.
12 Shut down with all power off.
13 Pray and boot.

by scruffy on Dec-28-02 at 19:38
Just for grins, when it comes to installing a USB type printer/scanner in Win98SE. Along with deleting all twain and twunk files, I have had to go into the registry and remove the referal's to the device. After doing that, the device software/drivers installed properly. Prior to that, it was an absolute NO WAY!

I recommend you reinstall MS Java Virtual Machine, and you can download and re-install this core IE component at: http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm
After you're reinstalled the Java VM, I recommend to continue upgrading to latest service release of your browser version or go to the next version release at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Note: if you are already running IE 5.5 SR-2 do not upgrade to the new 6.0

Here is the "how to restore the registry" from "PC911 - Friendly Computer Help In Plain English" http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/cfgbkup3.html

Use Scanreg to Restore the Registry and .ini Files

There is a real mode command line utility called scanreg.exe that is used from the Command Prompt Only boot option that can be used to "fix" or "restore" a damaged registry (as well as make a backup if desired).

To see the available switches, type SCANREG /?

To attempt to repair a damaged registry, type SCANREG /FIX

To restore a damaged registry and ini files (that is, replace them from the backup), type the following command. This will allow you to choose the backup you want to restore from.

SCANREG /RESTORE

Here is an undocumented switch for scanreg that forces it to compact the registry by eliminating wasted space:

SCANREG /OPT

In Windows, you can set an application to launch every time you start the computer. It's a feature that can be either a constant irritation or a time-saver. Here's how you make -- or unmake -- a program load automatically when you start Windows.
Any program with a shortcut in the Startup folder will automatically execute when you boot into Windows. To add a program:
1. Right-Click on Start and choose Open.
2. Double-click Programs.
3. Double-click Start-Up and add a shortcut for any program you want to load automatically.
To remove a program from Start-Up, just delete the Shortcut.

How do I check if a notebook pcmcia slot is a type II or III

"The PC Card standard involves 3 card sizes and 2 different types of cards.
Type I, Type II and Type III all refer to the physical size of the card. Most PC Card cards are Type II, such as modems, sound cards, network cards, CF adapters, that sort of thing. Type III cards are exactly twice the height of the Type II card, and are generally PC Card hard drives, or such cards as the Xircom Realport cards. Generally, Type I cards are somewhat less common, but they fit into a Type II slot.

In most laptops, the PC Card slots come as two Type II card slots stacked on top of each other, so you can insert either up to 2 Type II or 1 Type III. As Type I cards are almost the same size as Type II cards (slightly thinner), you can insert any combination of two cards."

There is a Freeware program called Startup Control Panel by a guy named Mike Lin That works from W95 through XP. Much slicker than MS Config. Startup Cop from PC Magazine is also good and free, but I like the other one better. For W9x, I have one called StartEd, which is shareware and which I actually thought enough of to register, but I haven't updated it to work with XP/NT. The others do and are free.

I'm having problems removing a trial version of Norton AntiVirus. When using un-install, nothing seems to happen. Norton doesn't show up in My Computer>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. A search from Start>Select>norton gives around 15 results. Would a 'select all' and 'Delete' be a safe way to remove this?

by rmorrison on May-24-02 at 19:15
Try installing Norton again and then uninstall. You probably got a bad install the first time. If the reinstall and uninstall don't work, you can delete files and folders named Norton and Symantec, but to really get rid of it means a trip into the registry, as Norton hides deep inside there.

by *bay* on May-26-02 at 18:51

I have tried to get to the site "ConsumerReports.org" for months and I keep getting "THIS PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED". I have an email from them and can't even reach them through their link. Everyone else seems to have no trouble getting on, but I can't! Anyone ever have this problem. There are several more sites I seem to have the same trouble with.

Is there a way, if I have a problem with an URL, to get the alternate address (such as 216.35.74.198/ in place of ConsumerReports.org)?

    Use: http://www.network-tools.com

    by wildcat.blue@verizon.net on May-15-02 at 08:29
I pinged the site, by name. The results come back with the IP number. I think that what I did also relies upon the DNS being updated and correct. It is possible that Consumer Reports has changed addresses and your DNS hasn't recognized the change, yet.

You could try a ping, but I don't think it will work for you. Open up a DOS window and type, "ping consumerreports.com" and see what happens.

Check with your ISP to determine if you are using the proper DNS settings. Since it appears that you can access sites by IP number and you are having problems accessing sites by domain name, it points to a DNS or server problem.

Another thing I just thought about. I'm not sure if browsers cache IP numbers to speed page access. If they do, your computer might be trying to access the old address. Clean out your cache and temp internet files.

by sweetness! on May-15-02 at 10:34
I had the same exact problem your having last year... first check and see if your browser is set to look for the most recent version of a web page Tools> Internet Options> Settings> then click on the 'every visit to the page' then click okay and okay again then reopen your browser... if that does not work.....

Check in your Windows folder for a file named Hosts; there is no file extention on this file if you have it.. some poeple do not have this file at all (it isn't needed) but the one that is named 'hosts.sam', leave that one alone.

If you locate the Hosts file.. open it with notepad and see if there is a big list of web sites that you have visited.. if you do... send or move it to 'My Documents' and then reopen your browser and try the sites you've been having problems with and see if you can access them.

For some reason the browser will look for this file (again, if it is on your computer) first before looking for the most current page.

    by mcphee33 on May-15-02 at 10:50
I sent the hosts to my documents. Should I delete the original hosts file?

by sweetness! on May-15-02 at 11:01

then close out your browser and re-open it again

RE: Advice to delete either of the files Jdbgmgr.exe or SULFNBK.EXE from your PC is a HOAX!

by kquad on May-15-02 at 07:28
If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, some Java applets may not run correctly. This is not a critical system file. The file version may vary with your operating system and version of Internet Explorer. If you want to restore the file, please contact Microsoft for instructions. This is a hoax that, like the SULFNBK.EXE Warning hoax, tries to persuade you to delete a legitimate Windows file from your computer. The file that the hoax refers to, Jdbgmgr.exe, is a Java Debugger Manager. It is a Microsoft file that is installed when you install Windows. It has a teddy bear icon as described in the hoax: CAUTION: Jdbgmgr.exe, like any file, can become infected by a virus. One virus in particular, W32.Efortune.31384@mm, targets this file. Norton AntiVirus has provided protection against W32.Efortune.31384@mm since May 11, 2001. [The SULFNBK.EXE file manages long file names in Windows.]

If you have Win-95-A, then you are limited to 2 GIG partitions but if you have 95-B or C you can use just about any size hard drive with out setting a 2 gig primary partition. (If your disk says the last copywrite is 1995, then it's almost has to be 95-A.)

I've got two computers that I want to connect. I've got a lan card in both, a cat5 cable in between but it says the network isn't connected. Any ideas.

You need a crossover cable, you can get a double plug adapter and a short crossover cable, then all you have to do is set up your protocols.. easy

You can create a "group" list and then use it to send to your entire address book. Just remember that most ISP's see any mail with more than 20 recipients as spam and bounce it. Make groups of 19 or 20 - assuming you know that many people. Here's how: OE Contact Group: http://www.actden.com/oe/unit3/3_3.htm
