"Napster kept track of music through a central server, but files themselves were stored on participants' hard drives. Newer file-sharing sites distribute the indexing function as well, making them harder to shut down."

If you got KaZaA LITE from the regular KaZaA site; No matter WHAT they say about "ad free" it is a LIE!! You need to go here http://doa2.host.sk/ and click on the download at the left and pick the version you want .. HOWEVER removal of ALL vestages of the commercial KaZaA is recommended before you install the NON COMMERCIAL version. Go with 1.72; the reason I suggest the 1.72 is the ONLY thing you need is the k-zap virus screener [built in?] unless you are on broadband and are going for videos!

Download KaZaZlite from: http://www.fasttrackhelp.com/downloadcenter.php
This version has NO ties to the various AdBot placing devices on the KaZaA site .. it is like you cleared ALL of the garbage out of the proggie and got it down to the bare but functional bones!! And then put up a pop up blocker!!

The upgrade nag you see in Kazaalite is not a Kazaalite nag, it is a Kazaa server nag recongnizing you don't have the latest version of Kazaa adware/spyware

For the new hacked version of KaZaA http://www.kazaalite.nl/en/ and download the SECOND version down (the top is too new for my liking) .. save it to disk, remove all vestages of your OLD version and INSTALL the new version. It is WAY faster as it doesn't keep interupting itself to change banner ads, for one, and it DOES NOT generate the copious script errors that the "commercial" version is prone to do!!

For the KaZaA users .. a little help from a friend .. (this is a DOCUMENT .. not an .exe) KaZaA Set-Up help and Bandwith tester! http://home.attbi.com/~soundguy1/kazaacrud.html

Is anybody using Kazaa with Win98 and experiencing a bad memory leak? If there is a lot of Kazaa activity (uploads) my machine slows to a crawl as memory is not de-allocated. It's nothing that a re-boot doesn't fix, but it's a little annoying. Such a little bug is not bad for the wonderful stuff I find with Kazaa.

by soundgod on Jul-24-02 at 15:42
On cable, I LIMIT my uploads to 5 and the downloads to 20. I got a guy last nite that is on unlimited, as I am & the file came to me at 120!

by wildcat.blue on Jul-24-02 at 15:43
My uploads are self-limiting, based on obscure content. I think that many folks (I do it sometimes) select multiple downloads of the same selection and keep the one with the fastest throughput. Of course, I do it quickly so I don't waste someone's bandwidth. I also think that some users initiate a bunch of stuff and realize that their dozens of transactions will never be completed and cancel them.

by soundgod on Jul-24-02 at 15:53
The search engine in KaZaa leaves a LOT to be desired .. it does NOT consolidate .. there may be 100 of the SAME files out there, but they keep sending you to the person that isn't ON LINE .. it's NUTS if you think about it!!

by wildcat.blue on Jul-24-02 at 16:00
I also use AudioGalaxy. Unfortunately, the latest version you are required to use has adware/spyware elements. I think Kazaa does, as well. I haven't run adaware in awhile.

by soundgod on Jul-24-02 at 16:04
The KaZaa full version has some spyware in it, but MOST can be eliminated with adaware, but there are two files that remain in Explorer that can't be removed .. they are the links to the BANNER POP UP ad at the bottom of the page!!

by wildcat.blue on Jul-24-02 at 16:06
Thanks for the info. I did a full clean on Kazaa and AdAware killed it and I had to reinstall. I'll hit Google to ID critical files, when I get a chance. I have noticed that ad-infected software is less aggressive than it used to be, and nothing is as aggressive as AOL.

by dehlert on Jul-24-02 at 16:09
AudioGalaxy is no more. At least you can't search & download like you used to - only p2p now due to a lawsuit.
As for those pop-ups, I downloaded NoAds and have eliminated virtually all pop-ups. http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds/

by wildcat.blue on Jul-24-02 at 16:10
Dehlert, I hadn't reloaded it after my last re-format. Did this happen recently?

by soundgod on Jul-24-02 at 16:11
I use pop up stopper .. it has, thus far, eliminated MOST pop up adds .. the adds in KaZaa are at the bottom .. constantly changing banners for casinos and the like .. IF they are removed .. the program WON'T work!! (tried it)

by dehlert on Jul-24-02 at 16:24
It happened a month or more ago. The only thing AG has on their site is the article. http://www.audiogalaxy.com/articles?&a=274 I haven't tried Kaaza for a LONG time. Have been looking for a good MP3 site. Some have recommended WINMX. Has anyone here tried it?

SG, have you tried Qtraxmax? http://www.qtraxmax.com/ If you like KaZaa, maybe I'll try that again. I didn't care much for Grokster or BearShare.

by sdmike1 on Jul-24-02 at 16:33
For a non spy-ware version of kazaa visit www.kazaalite.com. When you do a search for an item in kazaa it returns a list of all on-line participants that have files that match the search criteria. It does not list those that are off-line, as the system doesn't keep a central database and only searches connected computers. When a file is found the software will try to match up the files by name, size and bit rate and show all of the same file in one list under one of the users. A click on the "+" sign will show all of the users with the identified file. Double clicking on the "master" user will initiate a download, starting with that user, that tries to distribute the download out across all those that have it. Sometimes those users refuse the connection (not uploading files) and sometimes they get queued up because they're at their upload limit (personally set, like SG sets at 5). Sometimes the users leave. If I get a list of 20 users with a file it's not uncommon to only connect with 3 or 4 of them. Because the download is load-balanced the sum of the download speeds across multiple parts is better than a single provider. So, the more sources, the better your resulting speed will likely be. kazaa lite also eliminates MOST of the ads. One or two will pop up, but they're normally blank windows.
If your download is crawling you can often right click on a file transfer in your "traffic" tab and try "find more sources for download". The system will do the search again behind the scenes and attempt to increase your sources. One of the things that I do is check the people getting files from me and see if they have file sharing turned off. If they're not sharing files, I kill the upload. If they're not willing to share they shouldn't be able to get files either (IMO). If you guys have any questions let me know.
sg - I can give you a registry tweak up increase the download results count to 400. I'll just have to find it. By the way, what do you EXPECT the non-lite people to say? lol. When I do a list of all of a user's files more times than not I see that they have the kazaa 1.7.1 install program in their directory, which would imply that they're not using "lite"

by dehlert on Jul-24-02 at 20:30
sdmike, I downloaded a file from KaZaa for the first time and guess what - it had a virus. LOL!

by soundgod on Jul-24-02 at 20:34
The "lite" version doesn't have a virus scan .. when you get a "bad" file with the "regular" version .. you will get a message when you try to launch that there is no way the file can be launched (that is IF you are using certain programs .. I use the Creative Play Center from Sound Blaster, and it just tells me .. file no good!! So I just DELETE!!

I downloaded the KaZaA program after running adware, but I can't find a way to save my downloads so I can burn a cd. Is it feasable anymore?

by sdmike1 on Jul-31-02 at 16:03
hawaii004 - kazaa is full of spyware and adware. There is a hacked version called kazaa lite that eliminates all the spyware and most of the ads. You can get it at www.kazaalite.com. Just don't let the software auto-upgrade because it will upgrade to the latest REGULAR kazaa. I don't know how you're trying to download, but kazaa automatically downloads when you double click on a file in search results. It either puts it in the directory you specified manually (in the options) or in a download sub-directory within the kazaa directory.

I don't have kazaa on this computer otherwise I'd tell you exactly where to find the settings. In any event, go to your c:\program files\kazaa directory (or wherever you installed it) and see if there is a download folder in there. If so, and it's empty, you're either downloading somewhere else or downloading incorrectly. :)

by soundgod on Jul-31-02 at 16:20
There will be a folder icon on your desk top .. it is called my shared files .. that is where the stuff goes. ALSO you can get the the directory by going to WINDOWS explorer .. open program files .. open kazaa lite .. open the shared files folder. You will find all of your downloads THERE .. and that is the file you share with the world .. (the ONLY ONE that can be accessed thru kazaa. Stuff can be burned from there .. I have already burned 5 complete albums.)

Big difference betweeen KaZaA and the others .. the others attempted to store stuff on THEIR site. With KaZaA it is peer to peer .. you can only pick stuff up that you want WHEN some other member that HAS the tune is ON LINE .. KaZaA serves only as a search engine and portal. Some of the others would "hold" your request and when they could, they would up load the material. Ain't that way on KaZaA!!

I downloaded a site to pull music off of.... at the same time got a virus alert for the JS/NoClose trojan.... the mcafee program stopped it... and I deleted all the files to the music site... but now I have a small window that I can not do anything with that is minimized....says connected.. and has an icon on it that was associated to that music site.. it won't go away.... is this still part of that Trojan?... any help on what to do?... from what I read regarding this JS/NoClose... it creates annoying minimized windows ... so does that mean the thing is still in my computer? it was a music site... KaZaA I believe.... in the remove/add folders is a thing called....KaZaA media Desktop.. will not let me remove it...starts installing it.

by dehlert
Did you remove the program with Add/Remove Programs or just delete the folder?

by *bay*
Right click on the minimized thingy and click close or try hitting the alt and f4 keys together or hit ctrl, alt and delete keys ONCE and highlight the noclose thingy and hit end task. I get that no close js at KaZaa too....

by mtilley
tried the alt delete thing... it is not an option.. I never had "connected" on the bottom of my computer before.... nothing happens when I right click on the thing....argh ... just want to make sure it is out of my machine....

by soundgod
Only way to remove it is to vacuum it out through start> find files or folders> and type in kazaa> highlight and delete. then run adaware to get that ONE file out .. that ONE file that McAfee said is a VIRUS ISN'T a VIRUS .. McAfee IS THE VIRUS ... I have NO PROBLEMS with KAZAA .. it is open and running on my machine right now.

by *bay*
mt, you don't see it or anything strange in the close program box (ctrl, alt, delete once)??

by mtilley
hmmmmm......well I did all that......ran adaware.....deleted everything there....all files and folders with Kazaa.... and sounds like bay has had the same problems as me.... anyway, sounds like I probably got whatever it was...

by *bay*
SG, I don't believe your AV is picking up the noclose Java script VIRUS at Kazaa....maybe it's because you have java turned off..dunno...

by dehlert
That NoClose is a built-in program that allows pop-up ads (usually porn) and, as soon as you close one pop-up, another one comes up.
bay, I thought KaZaA Lite didn't have that JS included, but the regular version does?

by *bay*
well, I don't really have a problem with it....my av alerts me, quarintines it and then I close the window...have to right click on it a few times usually

by soundgod
Think my AV may have blocked it, then .. either that or the AdAware that I run on a REGULAR basis jerked it out. I have the reg version .. more contacts allowed and a larger search pattern .. but the first thing I did before going on line was to Ad Aware it and vac it out!!

by *bay*
I'm running Kazaa lite too....hmmmm..

by mtilley
ok.....whatever I did worked... did the ctrl alt delete again and grabbed one name that didn't look familiar and end task it...said illegal operation.... and had to reboot. but now its gone....thanks all.. and think I'll find another site for music.. thanks a lot folks... been messin with this thing off and on all day..... :)

by dehlert
mtilley ~ If you have the full version of KaZaA, I'd completely uninstall it and go to KaZaA Lite . It's Adware Free, Spyware Free, etc

by *bay*
JS/NoClose This javascript trojan allows various hidden functions to take place on a user's system. It exists in two forms: In HTA form, an HTML Application is created which is not visible to the user and can not be closed. In HTML form, a browser window is created which is minimized and can not be easily maximized or closed. Typically these window "tricks" are seen associated with advertisement and banner ad programs. Especially affiliated with pornographic sites and sites which pay commissions to others for displaying banner ads. The trojan does not contain any other payload and does not cause any damage to the local system. Files which trigger this detection should be deleted. dat's from Mac'ah'ify

by dehlert
bay, I learned about that JS/NoClose the hard way. I had no idea what it was. But one night I had a pop-up for a porn site, tried to close it, another one popped up. Every time I close one, 1 or sometimes 2 more would pop up. At one point I had about 14 pop-ups open that I couldn't get closed. I finally closed my browser to get out of the loop. Took me a couple of days to find out what caused it. Now I have Ad-Aware and run NoAds constantly.

by mtilley
I added the lite version and the no Ads download... so will wait and see... thanks for being helpful!

by dehlert
You'll have to add pop-ups to the No-Ads program at first. But after a reasonably short time, you won't have to do that.

by *bay*
Deb, wonder why mtilly's McAfee alerted and yours didn't...musta been on a break...

by dehlert
'Coz I have KaZaA lite - mtilley had the full version, I think. I do get an occasional alert during a download. I click on "clean" & McAfee usually deletes the file. I think that has to do with the File Freedom, though. Wish I didn't have that - but haven't been able to figure out how to delete it without messing up KaZaA. (Yea, I forgot about that little add-on program which I think was optional during download.)

by *bay*
OIC Deb.....info on the various noclose javascripts

by parpat
yet another reason to dis-able JAVA scripting on the browser !!

by dehlert
parpat, ok....what's the difference between Java console & Java logging? And what's a JIT compiler?

by killam
JIT = just in time - Compiles at runtime :)
Java by it's nature is byte code, not machine level code. It has to be compiled before runtime, so you have a compiler that compiles the byte code into machine language right before being run, thus JIT. It's this way so java can be run on multiple platforms -- the byte code is all standardized, but it gets compiled by the JIT compiler differently for different OS's like windows, mac os, linux, etc

by parpat
The Java Console window both displays Java messages and accepts input to Java applications. Unless you are writing a command-based Java application, you cannot use the Java Console window for input. Java Logging you can view any messages logged by an applet by opening the log text file In other words you need NOT either of these, unless your doing some programming, error checking...

by dehlert
So, in order to use a Java applet chat program, I would only need to enable the Java Console and not the other 2 (Logging & JIT compiler?)

Found something interesting on KaZaA yesterday .. some jerks are putting their own music on the system and putting a title or artist link to a known performer. Ya download and go to play, and here is some poorly recorded garage band with a very boring and obnoxious song .. I guess anything to get exposure, but that is stooping pretty low!!.... BTW, IF you are using KaZaA WITHOUT the virus shield and your OWN AV, you are just ASKING to get clobbered .. another thing .. don't use the PREVIEW as that will bypass your resident AV program.

Cydoor keeps finding my kazaa even though I have kazaalite. Every few weeks it pops up along with several other kazaa related spywares. I keep clicking "no" to the updates so how is it finding me?

by xyste on May-5-03 at 18:37
If you have ever had KaZaa installed search your system for the Cydoor advertising Spyware: CD_Load.exe and CD_Clint.and delete them. Uninstalling KaZaa will not remove them. That's why you can have Cydoor spying even if you are now using KaZaa Lite.

Both the Original KaZaA and KaZaA Lite (because KaZaA Lite has to work exactly the same as the Original KaZaA) actually check for CyDoor on your machine and will not run without it. However, KaZaA Lite gets around this by installing a dummy version of CyDoor, which appears correct to KaZaA, but does not serve the adverts, meaning they don't appear in KL. It also stops random pop-ups from appearing while you're using KL. This dummy version of CyDoor is from a group called Counterexploitation (CEXX).

by soundgod on Apr-29-03 at 17:05
The KaZaA LITE you got must be from the regular KaZaA site!! No matter WHAT they say about "ad free" it is a LIE!! .. you need to go here http://doa2.host.sk/ and click on the download at the left and pick the version you want .. HOWEVER removal of ALL vestages of the commercial KaZaA is recommended before you install the NON COMMERCIAL version. Go with 1.72; the reason I suggest the 1.72 is the ONLY thing you need is the k-zap virus screener unless you are on broadband and are going for videos!

by aces88 on Apr-29-03 at 17:39
I downloaded 1.72 ( I have cable so it takes maybe a minute ) It still has a bunch of optional stuff. What about this k-sig k-dat and avi preview stuff? Can I just do the kazaalite part and skip ALL of the dat, sig, avi stuff? What is the usenet?

by soundgod on Apr-29-03 at 17:42
YEP .. k-sig k-dat and avi preview stuff are ON LINE tools .. (I do NOT sample on line with KaZaA .. it is really too problematic as some clowns are still on 28.8 modems on a campus net and motor at a .04 rate and then P&M because they can't download!! KaZaA is NOT my primary source for tunes/videos .. I use the USENET (Newsgroups) something that is IMPOSSIBLE to monitor by ANYONE to any extent .. too large, too spread out, too many places to go!!)

In your information about your ISP, is a VERY small blurb about "News Groups" .. all browsers have a set up feature that allows access to those news and discussion groups. There is a LOT of information there .. and a lot of trash, porno, bogus information, hate groups, and so on .. but when you weed through .. there ARE usable areas. It is NOT for a kid to be in there, as there are absolutely NO restrictions on what can be posted. I use a stand alone (paid) NEWS READERS (I have two .. Agent and News Rover) they have better translation plug ins (the formats are really varied and most regular browsers can NOT handle some of the formats) But I also only "subscribe" to groups that don't have the stuff where you want to hit the delete button immediately!! occasionaly some WILL get posted into the groups, but the content becomes obvious, so you can choose NOT to view or listen!!

Oh, and "subscription" is free .. it is just a term used to designate those groups that you import into the primary or "subscribed" groups list on the browser or news reader. (there are between 30,000 and 50,000 of such groups currently listed)

WinRar will divide each cut into sections .. to be combined by the reciepient. I will do .rar's on VIDEO And ONLY if there are NO .par files (another PITA) (not worth time and effort on audio) especially when a week later somebody will post it as a cut by cut, not EVEN chopped up!! The NEW news reader "News Rover" is SUPPOSED to take care of the rar/par crud automatically .. but I still can't get it to work most of the time, because IF a section is missing .. NO WORKEEEE!!
