INDIANA POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL

Marshal Richard M. Clapp
04-07-1958 to 12-05-2003
At approximately 10:30 p.m. December 4, police were called to a residence in New Richmond after a woman there reported that she had been battered by her boyfriend. Marshal Clapp along with Deputy Jeremy Hughes from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department responded to a battery complaint. Upon arriving at the call, physical injuries to a female where noticed and the 17 year old male who was present, was found to be the aggressor. A struggle took place between both officers and the juvenile as the officers were attempting to affect the arrest for the domestic battery. Clapp, who was left exhausted by the struggle, fell ill and was given oxygen at the scene. Clapp was initially taken to a hospital in Crawfordsville and then transported to Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. December 5, from a heart attack. Marshal Clapp was a 20 year veteran of the New Richmond Police Department and was married with one son.
