Detective Dorley died on January 23, 1919, from a gunshot wound. Dorley and his partner attempted to arrest three robbery suspects at 6th Street and the Vandalia Railroad yards. After a gun battle, Dorley and one of the suspects were killed. Detective Dorley was 52 years old.
