Sheriff Ray Compton

Sheriff Compton, serving his second term as Sheriff had gone to the Webster Home with a search warrant after receiving several complaints concerning liquor activities. When entering the home, James W. Webster (42) shot and killed Sheriff Compton and escaped. Later while attempting to apprehend Webster, he also shot and killed Captain Lynn Black from the Cincinatti, Ohio Police Department, before comitting suicide. Prior to the incident involving Sheriff Compton, Webster served ten years for murder in Missouri and was serving a life sentence in Iowa for another murder. Webster was on escape status when he killed the two law enforcement officers.
