18HT HyGain Hytower™ Analysis

The 18HT Hytower in my opinion is one of the most versatile vertical antennas available for amateur use. It can be made to operate 160 through 10 meters. However, my experience is only 160 through 20 meters. My hytowers have survived many storms. The hytower is nearly full-size on 80 m; full-size on 40 m; and operates as a 3/4 wave vertical on 20 m. Figure 1 shows a screen dump of my model for the hytower and figure 2 shows 80/40/20 meter elevation patterns.

My conclusion from my EZNEC modeling is that with a good radial system the hytower is very a good antenna on 80 and 40 meters.

With a trap it operates on 160 meters as an inverted-L which provides a higher take-off angle and is a reasonably efficient lowband antenna. Figure 3 shows the electrical equivalent of the hytower. I compared the elevation patterns of a hytower with the 160 meter trap to an inverted-vee (apex at 62 ft). See figure 4.
