There are four aqueducts that deliver water to LA and Southern
California, each an amazing engineering accomplishment:
1 & 2: The Los Angeles (Owens Valley) Aqueducts - first completed
1913, second completed 1970. Runs 255 miles from the Mono Lake
area to San Fernando. Delivers water to City of LA only. First
aqueduct was engineered by William Mulholland. Completely gravity-
driven, no mechanics. Water carried over hills via siphons.
3. Colorado River Aqueduct - completed 1941, runs 242 miles
from Parker Dam to Southern California. Delivers water to all of
metro SoCal. The largest capacity by far of the aqueducts.
4. California Aqueduct - completed 1973, runs 444 miles from the
Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to Lake Perris. Delivers water
to various points in SoCal.
