I am looking for anything on W. R. McClain, Margaret (Kelly) McClain or Susan Della / Della Susan McClain. I have an old family letter written by his granddaughter Lillie Maude Fletchall wherein he is referred only as W. R. McClain. The letter also makes reference to his being a doctor and serving in the Civil War. We believe his daughter Della Susan (or Susan Della) McClain to have been born in Ohio. There is also an old family story of where the family thought that he had been killed in the Civil War and one day showing up at home.
Spelling for McClain may also be McLain or McLean or any other variation.
For W R McClain I have seen evidence of:
a W. R. McClain in Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia.
Captain W. R. McClain in the 51st Georgia
March 4, 1881, Petition to Sell Land in Weakley County, Tennessee with reference to W. R. McClain
a Thomas Augustus Palmer, born 8/20/1853, died 3/11/1899 in Stewart County, Georgia, Married Josie McClain, daughter of Dr. W.R. McClain of Early County, Georgia

Rapides Parish Newspapers - Louisiana
The Rapides Tribune was issued October 3, 1868, by W. R. McLean. On the 15th of that month the office was demolished and the material cast into Red River. He purchased a new outfit and returned to Alexandria on November 15, when the office was again destroyed. McLean was stoned, Judge Osburn's dwellings was damaged, and he and Parish Judge Barlow, both elected in April, 1868, on the Republican ticket, were subjected to abuse; C. W. Boyce, formerly president pro tem. of the Senate, was beaten, and other citizens assaulted. (added 01-13-2003)
For Margaret McClain I have seen evidence of:
Margaret McClain in the 1900 census for Jackson County Ohio where she is listed as the mother-in-law in the house. The age listed would work for her to be Della Susan's mother. (added 10-27-2002)
Should you have anything on these McClain's please email me.
