Music Recording Studios

Sound Scene Acoustics/Michael Jarzabkowski & Associates have designed more than 50 music recording studios in the USA, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Nearly all of our music recording studio projects have been on a turnkey design basis direct to the clients who have often also been the owners. We pride ourselves on trying to give our clients acoustic design that functionally serves the purposes they require without compromising acoustic integrity.

Many of the studio locations were in what could be termed acoustically unfavorable areas with high background noise levels and a lot of structure borne noise from neighbors who had not vibration isolated their mechanical equipment. All of our clients were pleased with the end results and a number of them have contracted us for their expansion programs.

Some of Our Studio Clients

Digitron Studio (Subsidiary of RIBU Strategy)

Studio Picture This was turnkey design including all civil works, acoustics, finishing details, mechanical, and electrical services. We worked closely with the managing director, Mr. Zainal Abidin Haji Abu, to convert the existing factory warehouse at Bangunan Universal, Jalan Penchala, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia to a 32-track digital recording studio.

The studio area was "floated" on springs and weighed over 30 tons. This level of isolation was required because the remainder of the warehouse was still in use as a commercial facility with forklifts and overhead cranes for loading trucks.

The equipment was supplied by Meteor Sound and Lighting and included an OTARI DTR900B 32 track digital recorder, an OTARI Series 54 console with moving fader automation, and Dynaudio Acoustic DA-M3 Active monitors.

Asia Pacific Music

Asia Pacific Music was another turnkey design project with some interesting design problems. The Client had purchased the top floor of a shoplot at Pandan Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to build their studios. The managing director, Mr. Alex Lee was concerned when we pointed out that the ceiling was not going to be high enough for good quality recording. Another problem was that the structural design of the building would not stand heavy additional construction loads.

We provided the design which included raising the roof of the building an additional four feet to give the studio area enough height for a natural early reflection decay and good vocal and drum recording ambiance. We also provided a lightweight aerated concrete floating floor design with multiple layer partition ceilings and walls to isolate against structural noise in the adjacent continuity shoplots.

The equipment was supplied by Studer (Singapore) and included a Studer A820 24 track recorder with Dolby SR, a DDA Profile console and Quested QMS 210 monitors.

Vafaco Studio (Ho Chi Minh City - VIETNAM)

All equipment was supplied by Otari Singapore. The console was an Otari Concept Series 34, The recorder was a MTR100A and the monitors were Genelec 1034's. Installation was done by Meteor Sound and Lighting, Malaysia.

Prima Music Studios

Turnkey design for one studio and one control room off Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for songwriter and composer Mr. Wah Idris. At the owner's request, we took over this project after construction had already started. The Client called us in because of problems with the acoustic design done by another company.

Construction was stopped for four weeks until we could redesign the project, and was then continued with completely new drawings, documentation, and specifications provided by us. We used as much as possible of the existing materials and shape while demolishing the ceiling and some other problematic construction. Equipment was supplied by Larkin Audio from London, U.K. and includes a Saturn 24 track recorder, a Soundtracs Quartz console and Quested 210 monitor speakers.
