CGS 1000: Computer Information Systems
First Meeting Notes Fall 1998
Anne Marshall Parker, Instructor

Get Data Files - first week of class Two methods are available:
  1. The Essential Data: I have stored the data you'll need to complete homework assignments in the Microsoft Office 97 textbook on our LAN at SCDATA/sys/info/compsci/cgs1000/ and we will take time to retrieve this data in class. This data is a partial set of textbook data which will allow you to complete assigned homework.
  2. If your data becomes corrupted or lost, or you want to complete additional assignments for practice: The complete data files for use with the Microsoft Office 97 textbook (including data for cases I have not assigned) can be found at http://www.course.com/downloads From there, click Browse by Subject, click Office and Other Suites, click Microsoft Office 97, click New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 97 Enhanced. There are lots of files there; pick what you need. There are download instructions at the web site if you need help.
Email Address - first week of class You'll need an Email address to use in this class. If you don't have an ISP at home, or a student account at MCC South (we aren't issuing any new ones, so if you don't already have one you won't be able to get one), there are a number of places on the net where you can get free Email. MCC recommends that you try http://www.hotmail.com and I can attest that this one works pretty well; I've used it and found it very easy to work with. If you select another provider, be sure it will allow you to send and receive Email attachments. Once you've got it set up, be sure to check your mail frequently for mail from me.
Join CyberClass - first week of class There are instructions on your CyberClass diskette, but here's another set, just in case you need them.
  1. Open your browser and connect to the Internet.
  2. Insert your CyberClass diskette in Drive A:
  3. In your browser, click File, Open..., Browse... (Internet Explorer) or File, Open Page..., Choose File... (Netscape).
  4. Click the Look In List arrow and select 3 1/2" Floppy (A:)
  5. Double-click connect.htm
  6. Click the OK button (Internet Explorer) or Open button (Netscape).
  7. Click the Enter CyberClass button.
  8. If you've already joined the class, leave the class key box blank, enter your username and password and click Log In.
  9. If you're a new user, enter your class key (provided by me in class), then click Join the Class. You can choose any username and password you like, but be sure to WRITE THEM DOWN and save the paper where you'll be able to find it when you need to log in to CyberClass, otherwise you'll be out of luck.
CyberClass activities I will be posting assignments and activities at the CyberClass website as the semester progresses, so check the site regularly to stay updated.
