Sat: On campus, but in class the entire timePREREQUISITE: None COURSE CONTENT: A broad survey of the entire field of data processing including: record, file, and data base organization; computer hardware; microcomputer systems; data representation; networks, data communications, ethical issues, Email and the Internet; business applications including word processing, spreadsheeting, charts and database management. 2 or more soft folders with closed pockets for submission of assignments and practical testsGRADING SCALE: A = 90% or better; B = 80% to 89%; C = 70% to 79%; D = 60% to 69%; F = less than 60% WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE: Students seeking to withdraw must fill out their own withdrawal slips. The last day to change to audit status or to withdraw from this class is the midpoint of the course, listed in the Course Outline. (Section 01, Section 06). After that date, students may not withdraw. MAKEUP TEST POLICY: If you must miss a test (PLEASE DON'T unless it's unavoidable), you may make it up as long as you schedule and take the makeup before I return the original test to the class. Usually I return tests at the next class meeting, so don't wait until then to talk about a makeup. CODE OF CONDUCT: Students are expected to abide by the MCC Code of Conduct (see The Lancer Student Handbook) at all times. Students who disrupt class for any reason may be withdrawn from the course at any time during the semester. All assignments, papers, and tests are individual projects which must be completed by you alone. Working together is not permitted and is considered CHEATING by both parties. Any student who cheats on an assignment or test will receive a 0 on that assignment or test. COPYRIGHT LAW: Students at Manatee Community College are expected to obey the copyright laws of the United States. Students may NOT make copies of copyrighted material except where permission is expressly granted by the holder of the copyright. Students who violate the copyright laws will lose the privilege of using the Campus computer lab, and other penalties may also be assessed. SOFTWARE: Students using the MCC South Campus Computer Science Lab will have access, in the lab, to Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Office 97, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Please note that PERSONAL SOFTWARE MAY NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE COMPUTER LAB. We have adopted this rule to help prevent computer viruses from entering our lab. HOMEWORK GUIDELINES:
- Late homework will be penalized: The penalties for late homework are as follows:
- Classes which meet twice each week: 10% per class period late;
- classes which meet once each week: 20% per class period late.
- Homework is due in class on the day shown in the Course Outline.
- Homework submitted after class, whether in my office, my mailbox or in the classroom or over the Internet, is considered late and the late penalty will be assessed.
- Neatness counts: All submissions must be neat and professional-looking to receive full credit. Printer paper should always consist of full sheets. Handwritten notes must be clear and readable; paper should be neat and unwrinkled.
- Folders are required: All printed computer assignments must be submitted in a folder with a pocket and accompanied by a disk, unless I grade them in class. Please do not include other material, such as old assignments, class notes, etc., in your folder. Submit only the printed copy of your current assignment and accompanying disk.
- Assignments must be clearly identified: a) Folder(s): your name, course, section, instructor; b) Printout(s): your name, the filename of the file where your work is stored; c) Disk(s): your name, course, section, instructor.
