SX-70 Manipulation

This is a fun process! I get to draw like a real artist right on the surface of the print! The emulsion inside the print is altered by the pressure of various pointed tools. The pressure breaks down and mixes the emulsion layers of the print, turning them to a milky grey. Because the film emulsion is sandwiched between the top layer of mylar and the black backing, new lines, forms and textures can be created in a photo.

This process really makes photos look like paintings, but there’s no mess!

Like Polaroid transfer, SX-70 manipulation blurs the distinction between photography and handcrafted art. The image can be manipulated up to about 8 hours after it’s made.

I’ve cropped the above image for display here. Since all SX-70 prints are the same size, the pavement extended further down. This picture was used for a printed piece about teenagers.
