Hello again! It has been a long time hasn't
it? As usual so many good things have happened since the last update, I don't
even know where to begin! But I guess the biggest thrill has to be the
correspondence I've received from Dwayne and Joan Hickman. Dwayne has recently
started his own website at www.dwaynehickman.com.
There you can view his beautiful paintings and order autographed photos and
other items. You can even "Ask Dobie!" any questions you might have.
But one thing you won't find there is a lot of in-depth information about the
Dobie Gillis TV show. I think he didn't want his site to overemphasize that one
aspect of his career. That's what The DOBIE
Pages! are for, so he provides a link to my site to satiate the fanatics.
Another big thrill was hearing from Randy
Newman's archivist, Gary Norris. Randy Newman ("Short People", "I
Love L.A.") is the nephew of the late Lionel Newman who composed The Dobie
Gillis Theme Song and scored the entire series. What I didn't know was that a
very young Randy Newman also composed a song for the "Northern Comfort"
episode! (Dobie's southern cousin Virgil comes north to be a rock 'n roll
singer.) Randy would love to acquire a copy of that song so if anybody out
there has that episode on videotape, please contact me! Even though I couldn't
help directly, Gary very kindly provided me with a wonderful gift of the rare 45
single of "Dobie" b/w "Maynard's Caper". Which you can now
see and hear on my Lionel Newman page. Thank you Gary!

The pride
of my collection is still Issue #1 of DC Comics "The Many Loves of Dobie
Gillis"! Dobie comics are rarer than hen's teeth. Look up Issue #1 in a
price guide and you'll see what I mean! I was really lucky to find this
near-mint copy at a reasonable price. Issue #1 may be the only issue that
really stayed true to the spirit of the show. Even the artwork is accurate
(just look at Thalia!) Later issues were drawn in a less realistic style,
portrayed Dobie as an oafish unlikeable Casanova and made Maynard out to be a
complete idiot. But Issue #1 was so faithful to the show that it could easily
have been another TV episode, perhaps because Max Shulman had to approve it. In
my next update I'll take a closer look at Dobie comics.
As always, I dig hearing from fellow fans so please continue to write me!
Recently I've gotten e-mail from Max Shulman's grandkids, and from S. Peter Pryor himself! (Dobie and Maynard went to S. Peter Pryor Junior College) So now I know what the "S." stands for!

Oh, one last thing: My name is David Fairweather -- and I like girls! ;>
Like Bye!
