| About Us Pleasantview Orchids, started in 1997, is my small orchid nursery located in Loudoun County, Virginia. This is a small and part-time operation run from my home. Although I cannot offer the full time service or availability of a large commercial orchid nursery, I hope to provide unique plant offerings and personalized service to you. I have been growing orchids for nearly 23 years and have been actively hybridizing Phalaenopsis for the past 5 years. I specialize in Phalaenopsis orchids, grow Phragmepedium and Paphiopedilum and enjoy appreciating all the other orchid genuses. I hope to begin hybridizing Phrags and Paphs in the not too distant future. My hybridizing program is primarily focused on large red phals but I also look to increase quality in species through crossing high quality, rare, or unique siblings or by selfing that "special" plant of a particular specie. I have a laminar flow hood and perform all flasking, replating, and deflasking on-site. Plants from crosses that I produce are guaranteed to be as labeled or can be returned for a full refund. My growing conditions consist of a temperature, humidity, and light controlled grow room. My growing medium of choice is a mix consisting of coir, coco husk chunks and perilite. I also have high regards for the Texas A&M mix consisting of peat moss, charcoal, and perilite. Frequently I purchase flasks, compots, and clones from other commercial growers in order to inject new breeding lines to my hybridizing program. When possible, I offer for sale the extra plants from these purchases. Phone Number You may have noticed that I do not have a contact phone number listed. No I am not trying to avoid you. My full time profession restricts my ability to publicize the phone number of my residence. We have cell phones but cell phone coverage at my home is almost non-existent due to the geographic topology. The good news is that Verizon Wireless is in the process of constructing two new cellular towers to service our community and yes my cell phone service is with Verizon!. These towers are scheduled to be operational in the June/July 2003 timeframe. When they are operational, I will post a cell phone contact number. In the mean time, the best way to contact me is via email. Visiting My growing area is open to the public by appointment only. As mentioned above, Pleasantview is a small, part-time operation. My wife and I work full time jobs during the week and are many times on call or required to work on the weekends. The best time to plan a visit is on weekends; Friday, Saturday or Sunday. All visits must be scheduled in advance to ensure that I will be around. I appreciate that most people are understanding and respectful of this policy, though some are not. Unscheduled visitors will not be accepted.
I hope you find some area of interest within this site. If you have questions or would like additional information just send an email. I am eager to hear from you.
Sincerely,Doug Burton |
