Index Episode #2-1-1: Stuck Up, Up and Away
- Title refers to Superman's cry "up, up, and away!" [Adam Stephanides]
- The bank robbers drive away in a black van saying, "I love it when a plan comes
together!" which is a Hannibal Smith (George Peppard) quote from The A-Team.
[Collin]
- The "fastball special" is from the X-Men comics, usually performed by
Colossus and Wolverine. [ALPH]
- Princess' continual buying/building of more powerful supersuits is reminiscent of B-Ko's
continual stream of more powerful mecha in Project A-Ko. [osakojj]
- The style of the fight sequence between the Powerpuff Girls and
Princess borrows heavily from that seen in Dragonball Z. [Psychoprog]
Episode #2-1-2: School House Rocked
- Title plays on ABC's Schoolhouse Rock educational shorts. [Robert Hutchinson]
- The truant officer, Sgt. Thursday, is a takeoff on Sgt. Friday from Dragnet.
[Collin]
- When Arturo gives the name of his comb, it's a long string of names ("Maria Conchita
yadda yadda yadda... but you can call her ...."); it is probably from a Señor Wences
routine, in keeping with Arturo's origin. [Collin]
- At the end, Bubbles states that "education is the progressive realization of our
ignorance." This is very close to a quote by Will Durant, a man known as
"philosophy's greatest salesman." [Justin VanNingen]
Episode #2-2-1: Collect Her
- Buttercup is punching a side of beef like Rocky. [Collin]
- When the Mayor calls the roll of Townsville's citizens, one of the names he calls is
"Genndy McCracken." This is a combination of Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Dexter's
Laboratory and co-producer of The Powerpuff Girls) and Craig McCracken.
[CJA]
- Another of the names he calls is "Chaim Ishkabibble." Ish Kabibble was a radio
personality of the 1930s on Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge. [Adam Stephanides]
Episode #2-2-2: Supper Villain
Episode #2-3-1: Birthday Bash
- One of the party guests looks like Princess Leia from Star Wars.
[Karley Johnston]
Episode #2-3-2: Too Pooped to Puff
- Even though there's no dialogue directly borrowed, the feel of the scene where the
Powerpuff Girls coach the townsfolk on destroying the monster is very similar to the part
in Monty Python and the Holy Grail when the crowd is trying to determine
whether Connie Booth's character is a witch. [Zobovor]
This was
confirmed in
an interview with
PPG
storyboard artist Cindy Morrow at the Pokey Oaks Fanfic
Library. [CJA]
Episode #2-4-1: Beat Your Greens
- One of the Townsville kids is wearing an NWO (New World Order) t-shirt. [Frederick J.
Barnett] "New World Order" is the name of Hulk Hogan's tag team in WCW
wrestling when he tried out his "bad guy" image. [Arnold Kim]
- As the Broccoloids make their final assault on Townsville, the Emperor orders a
"colonel" to open fire on the city. The "colonel" is wearing a hat
that makes him look like Colonel Mu'ammar al-Qadhafi of Libya. [CJA]
- One kid, having eaten "forty stalks" of the evil Broccoloids, exclaims,
"The horror ... the horror ..."a reference to Joseph Conrad's Heart of
Darkness. [Robert Hutchinson]
- Dexter's father (Dexter's Laboratory) is one of the people in
the TV control room at the beginning of the episode. [MegaRouge]
Episode #2-4-2: Down N' Dirty
- The angry mob, complete with with flaming torches, chases Buttercup through the forest on
foot, reminiscent of the mob of angry villagers found in many monster movies, most notably
Frankenstein variants. [Evan Hammerman]
- It finally dawns on Buttercup that she can just fly away. This is probably a gag lifted
from other cartoons ... but we don't have a definite source yet. [Evan Hammerman]
Episode #2-5-1: Dream Scheme
- This entire episode is in verse, and at one point we have the following dialog:
Professor: "Now go to sleep and I mean it!"
Bubbles: "Does anybody want a peanut?"
This non sequitur rhyme is an Andre the Giant line from The Princess Bride.
[Collin]
- There are several references within the imagery of the nightmare; among them are a
walking bed from Little Nemo and Bubbles as Jaws. [ALPH]
Episode #2-5-2: You Snooze, You Lose
Episode #2-6-1: Slave the Day
- Ace's cry "BILLY! DON'T BE A HERO!" is from the Bo Donaldson
and the Heywoods song of the 1970s. [David Matthew Wood]
Episode #2-6-2: Los Dos Mojos
- Mojo's quote
"One shall be the number of Mojo Jojos in the world...." is a reference to the
scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail in which Brother Maynard
is called upon to read about the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch" from the
"Book of Armaments." [Collin]
Top of Page /
Bottom of Page Episode #2-7-1: A Very Special Blossom
- Title parodies the NBC series Blossom, which took the "very
special"
episode concept to new lows. [Robert Hutchinson]
Episode #2-7-2: Daylight Savings
Episode #2-8-1: Mo Job
- Mojo Jojo asks Princess "You talking to me? Are you talking to me?" from the
movie Taxi Driver. [ALPH]
- The "Ton o' Money" Princess has her father drop on Mojo resembles the 16-ton
weight frequently seen in Monty Python's Flying Circus. [CJA]
- The sequence where Mojo zaps Princess with Chemical X is taken from He-Man and the
Masters of the Universe, with Princess shouting an equivalent to "I have the
POWER!!!" [CJA]
- Princess lures the girls by shouting "Help! I need somebody. Help! Not
just anybody!" which are the first lines of the Beatles' song "Help!"
[Collin]
- Upon sucking up Buttercup's fire blast, Princess utters "That's a spicy
meatball!" (in an over-the-top Italian accent), from a famous 1969 Alka-Seltzer commercial. [Collin, Arnold Kim]
Episode #2-8-2: Pet Feud
- BEEBO is named after a song by Optiganally Yours called "Beebo."
This was confirmed in an article in Powerpuff Girls Magazine. [ellbbe, raymia]
- BEEBO resembles a tribble from the Star Trek cartoon series episode "More Tribbles, More
Trouble" where a genetically modified tribble grows to giant size before exploding
into many small tribbles. [ALPH]
- There's a Pikachu toy on the floor in the girls' room, as well as a Pikachu fridge
magnet on the fridge when Bubbles goes to feed BEEBO. [Johnathan Drain]
Episode #2-9-1: Imaginary Fiend
- While attempting to attack the imaginary Patches, Blossom is tripped at full speed and
lands in the coat rack, coming out with a coat and cap looking like Eric Cartman from South
Park. [Arnold Kim]
She then has a little Cartmanesque dialogue including the catchphrase "seriously." [dave]
- Koos, the first imaginary friend thought up by Bubbles, is a reference to a couple of
episodes of Dexter's Laboratory featuring the character. [Legion1979]
- The items "floating" around the classroom and ghost-like writing on
the blackboard are from Roald Dahl's Matilda. [Agent Orange]
Episode #2-9-2: Cootie Gras
- Contains several parodies of "mobster" movies, including the "offer you can't
refuse" line from The Godfather. [Evan Hammerman]
- The hijacked truck driver's shirt has an R. Crumb "Keep on Truckin'" character
on it. [Evan Hammerman]
- Mojo Jojo steals a "Big Bag of Jewels", based on a "Big Bag of
Bricks" toy. [ALPH]
- Mojo Jojo's line "Have you said hello to my little friend?" is from
the movie Scarface. [CJA]
Episode #2-10-1:
The Powerpuff Girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever
- The episode title is a reference to the ubiquitous Richard Scarry children's books and
videos, many of which have titles in the form of Richard Scarry's
Best/Biggest/Funniest/Busiest [fill in the blank] Ever. [Kenneth McAlinden]
- Bubbles and Buttercup play with a Nintendo 64 console. [David Matthew Wood]
Episode #2-10-2: Just Desserts
Episode #2-11-1: Twisted Sister
- Title from the eponymous musical group. [Robert Hutchinson]
- The girls use a book, written by the Professor, entitled How I Did It, which
records the Powerpuff recipe. This is the title of the book that, in the movie Young
Frankenstein, Gene Wilder, playing the title character, finds in
his grandfather's personal library, which instructs him on how to create
life from lifeless matter. [Collin]
Episode #2-11-2: Cover Up
Episode #2-12-1: Speed Demon
Episode #2-12-2: Mojo Jonesin'
- The helicopter the kid in the wheelchair flies past has NCC1701 on its side, the number
of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of
the wheelchair and that designation could be a reference to the Trek takeoff from the Bloom
County comic strip, in which Opus and friends pretended Cutter John's wheelchair was
the "Starship Enterpoop." [ALPH, Puddytat, Evan Hammerman]
- The first time Mojo opens the box of Chemical X, first a white glow emerges and then
rays shoot out. This resembles the end of the movie Kiss Me Deadly, in which a
box containing an atomic bomb is opened, first releasing a hellish white glow and then
exploding. It also is reminiscent of the suitcase in Pulp Fiction (which was
itself a tribute to the box in Kiss Me Deadly). [Adam Stephanides]
- The children extend their hands out and ask "Please sir, can we have some
more?", as in the musical Oliver! [Ian Patrick Corbett]
- The phrase "just say no," coined by first lady Nancy Reagan when asked what
children should do when offered drugs, makes an appearance. [Ian Patrick Corbett]
- After giving the kids Chemical X for the first time, Mojo says, "Together you
will be a wonderfully diverse and multi-ethnic superhero team, perhaps saving
the environment, or whatever"—referring to
Captain Planet and the Planeteers. [raymia]
Episode #2-13-1: Something's a Ms.
- The scene with the Mayor's "Strong men also cry" speech is a takeoff on a
scene from The Big Lebowski. [Barimen]
- Blossom calls for "Wing Attack Plan R". This is the plan sent to the B-52s in Dr.
Strangelove that tells them to attack their Russian targets. [Jeff Coleman]
- When Ms Bellum wonders where the girls got the ransom money, Blossom
informs her that there is no money in the bag, and Buttercup says "It's
the mayor's dirty laundry" and Bubbles quips "The whites!" This is a
throwback to a scene in The Big Lebowski in which the Dude asks
"What's in there?" regarding Walter's funny looking briefcase and Walter
responds "It's the ringer... my dirty undies... the whites!" [Liz Doughty]
Episode #2-13-2: Slumbering With the Enemy
- Title plays on the film Sleeping with the Enemy. [Robert Hutchinson]
- Mojo disguises himself as a little girl named "Mojesha," a play on the title
character of the UPN show Moesha. [CJA]
- The swimming costume still is based on a famous Ambre Solaire/Coppertone advert. [ALPH]
- When Mojo and the Girls are looking at the boy magazines, Buttercup looks at a
black-haired guy, who actually is based on the series creator, Craig McCracken. Cartoon
Network confirmed this. [Kristy Rieger]
