"Pete's-a Pizza," plays on the slogan of the Little Caesar's chain. [CJA]
Episode #5-1-2: Not So Awesome Blossom
- Title refers to the "Awesome Blossom" fried onion appetizers served at
Chili's restaurants. [CJA]
- "Hot Dog on a Skewer" is a takeoff on the "Hot Dog on a Stick" stands

wears in the episode. [MajorMan]
Episode #5-2: Power-noia
- The scene with Bubbles and the clown bear comes from the movie
Poltergeist. [Frank Lhota]
Episode #5-3-1: Monstra-City
- Winthrop Mangrove's quote "You see, my idea was to lease one of the
outlets back to the Mayor, so that it appears on the monthly budget and
not on the permanent account" refers to the "Miracle of Birth" scene in
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, in which Mr Pycroft, the hospital
administrator (Michael Palin), says, "Ah, I see you have the machine that
goes 'ping.' This is my favorite. You see, we lease it back from the company
we sold it to and that way it comes under the monthly current budget and
not the capital account." [BJL]
Episode #5-3-2: Shut the Pup Up
- Talking Dog's line "Man! Those are some tender vittles!" refers
to the cat food of the same name. [CJA]
Episode #5-4-1: Toast of the Town
- The Mayor's line "Ooh! What does this button do?" and pressing
of buttons marked "Do Not Press" parodies Dee Dee's bad habit on
Dexter's Laboratory. [Frank Lhota]
- The Mayor climbing the building, Ms Bellum in hand, is, of course, a
parody of King Kong. [Frank Lhota]
Episode #5-4-2: Divide and Conquer
Episode #5-5-1: Burglar Alarmed
Episode #5-5-2: Shotgun Wedding
- The hand-held video tape of Fuzzy is a takeoff on The Blair Witch
Project. [Lots O' People]
- When the Professor mentions the possibility that Fuzzy might be a
bear, he looks at a chart with a picture of Yogi Bear. [Frank Lhota]
- The Narrator's ending line, "Y'all come back now, y' hear?" is taken
from the ending of The Beverly Hillbillies. [Frank Lhota]

- During the parade honoring Ms Keane at the beginning of the episode,
several clones of Augie Doggie appear in a pet store window. [CJA]

Episode #5-8-2: Boys Toys
- Boomer's line "Da plane! Da plane!" is Tattoo's (Hervé Villechaize)
signature quote on Fantasy Island. [AllyKatAVR]
- The RRBs' "A tank!" "A plane!" "A boat!" "Oh my!" is an obvious
takeoff on "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" from The Wizard of Oz.
[AllyKatAVR]
Episode #5-9-1: Seed No Evil
Episode #5-9-2: City of Clipsville
Episode #5-10-1: Lying Around the House
- The dotted line showing us where the Lie traveled and the cries of
"Not I" and "I dunno" over this sequence are homages to Bil Keane's comic
The Family Circus. [puffmommy]
Episode #5-10-2: Bubble Boy
Episode #5-11-1: Documentary
- Brian's series of questions about the girls ("...How tall are they, and
what are their shoe sizes?" etc.) at the beginning of the episode is lifted from a scene in The
Hudsucker Proxy in which the Editor is encouraging his writers to get
the real scoop on the new president of Hudsucker Industries. [David
Woodall]
- The last citizen Brian interviews is Don Shank, the real-life
storyboard artist and art director for The Powerpuff Girls. Also,
note that Shank comments on the size of the girls, something that changed
with the new art directors. [Frank Lhota]
Episode #5-11-2: Girls Gone Mild
- Title plays on the Girls Gone Wild series of adult-oriented
videos. [CJA]
- The "Obey" website the car thief browses is an obvious takeoff on
eBay. [Asa Lothario]
- The Dooks of Doom resemble the late Don "Big Daddy" Roth's "Rat Fink"
character, popular in the 1960s. [Daisy Ploughman]
Top of Page /
Bottom of Page Episode #5-12-1: Curses!
- The pseudo-swearing of the Potty Mouth Monster is clearly taken from
Bugs Bunny's long time nemesis, Yosemite Sam. Yosemite was created by WB
director Friz Freleng, and has been said to be a self-parody: Friz, like
Yosemite, suffered from an explosive temper. [Frank Lhota]
- The Potty Mouth Monster looks a lot like a villain from the "Captain
Underpants" chapter books. [Frank Lhota]
- The creative array of sound effects covering up the girls' salty
language may be derived from actor / comedian Jim Backus' novelty
recording "The Dirty Old Man." [Frank Lhota]
Episode #5-12-2: Bang for Your Buck
Episode #5-13-1: Silent Treatment
- The name of the villain, Max von Nitrate, refers to the type of film
used for silent movies. [Frank Lhota]
Frank adds: "Silent films (and sound films up to 1950) were printed on
nitrate film stock. Unfortunately, nitrate decomposes and catches fire
very easily, resulting in the loss of many films of that era. Over half of
the Hollywood films made before 1950 are lost. There is, therefore, no
more appropriate name for a silent film villain than Nitrate."
- The "Joseph Skunk" credit is a takeoff on the silent film producer
Joseph Schenck. [Frank Lhota]
- Among the legendary silent stars caricatured in the girls' movie are
the Keystone Kops, Harold Lloyd (hanging from the clock), and Charlie
Chaplin (the little tramp who keeps getting knocked over by von Nitrate
and the Kops). [Frank Lhota, GlowWorm, others]
- The sequence in which the girls are silhouetted against the screen
while making fun of the film is, of course, an homage to Mystery
Science Theater 3000. [Parsec]
- The Professor, in his role as butler, is addressed as Jeeves. Jeeves
was the super-competent "gentleman's gentleman" from the P. G. Wodehouse
novels and is the mascot of ask.com. [realfuzzy]
- "Oil Can Larry," advertised on one of the posters at the silent movie
theater, is a takeoff on Oil Can Harry, Mighty Mouse's archenemy in the
1940's and '50s Terrytoon cartoons. [Fourth Powerpuff, Alan Back]
Episode #5-13-2: Sweet 'n' Sour
Episode #5-14-1: Prime Mates
- Mojo Jojo sleeps with a plushie of Monkey from Dexter's Laboratory.
[CJA]
Episode #5-14-2: Coupe d' Etat
- Blossom's line "Open the door, KARR" and KARR's reply "I'm afraid I
can't do that" are, obviously, from 2001: A Space Odyssey. [Mojolator]
Episode #5-15-1: Makes Zen to Me
- The monk's addressing Buttercup as "Grasshopper" and the interior of
the monastery are from Kung Fu. [homey104]
- Mojo Jojo's line "I left but a student, but I must be the master,
etc." is reminiscent of Darth Vader's comments to Obi-Wan Kenobi in
Star Wars: A New Hope. [CJA]
Episode #5-15-2: Say Uncle
- The plot of this episode resembles that of the "Our Gang" short The
Kid from Borneo. [BeansDooma]
BeansDooma comments: "'Yum, yum, eat em up' is all Spanky's
'Uncle George' can say. But it's not his real uncle. It's 'Bumbo the Wild
Man!' Basically, Spanky brings home the Wild Man exhibit from...
something, thinking he's his uncle. The whole gang (Stymie, Wheezer, the
likes) is chased around the house. Hilarity ensues."
The two episodes are also similar in that the "uncles" both have food
obsessions (taffy in this episode and candy in Borneo). [Frank J.
Lhota]
- Uncle Eugene's telegram includes the lines "I'll be on the last train
from Clarksville. Come meet me at the station"—a play on the opening line
from the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville." [GlowWorm]
Episode #5-16-1: Reeking Havoc
Episode #5-16-2: Live and Let DyNaMo
- Title plays on the James Bond movie Live and Let Die. [CJA]
- The "Razzle Dazzle" move is a reference to the movie Stripes,
with the girls announcing the move in the same tone of voice as John
Winger (Bill Murray): “RAZ-zle DAZ-zle!” [Mojolator]
Episode #5-17-1: Oops, I Did It Again
- Title from the Britney Spears song. [CJA]
- Beatrice's line "Bertha, Bertha, Bertha!" is a takeoff on Jan Brady's
(Eve Plumb) "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" on The Brady Bunch. [GlowWorm]
Episode #5-17-2: Mo' Linguish
- Mojo Jojo's quote "...conjunction junctions, which have a multiple of
functions...." refers to the Schoolhouse Rock short "Conjunction
Junction." [GlowWorm]
- The final scene, in which Buttercup forces Mojo to watch Talking Dog
"reprogram" the citizens of Townsville, is reminiscent of the aversion
therapy scenes in A Clockwork Orange. [Spitfire]
Episode 5-18: A Made Up Story
- The plot of this episode is reminiscent of the Warner Brothers short
"Mustache Daffy," in which Daffy Duck draws mustaches on every poster,
billboard, etc. he can get his hands on. [GlowWorm]
- Mask Scara's riding the makeup brush and spelling out her name is a
reference to the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) skywriting
"Surrender Dorothy" with her broom in The Wizard of Oz. [GlowWorm]
- "Mangelene," seen on the billboard peeled away by Bubbles' sonic
attack to reveal the half-shaved "Canada" moose, is a takeoff on Angelyne,
a model famous for promoting herself by means of billboards (she's known
as "Hollywood's Billboard Queen") and who, along with 130 or so other
people, ran for governor of California in October 2003. [CJA]
