For something truly different, tour "Shangri La" the house that tobacco heiress Doris Duke built in the late 1930s.  Finally open to the public, today it houses her extensive collection of Islamic art and boasts spectacular views of Diamond head.  Book early, appointments are required and tours fill up weeks in advance.

In nearby Waipahu you can step back in time and tour a historic Plantation Village or explore historic trains and take a ride back in time on Oahu's only active Railway.

Take a drive towards Honolulu where you can  experience WWII history at the Pearl Harbor Memorial , Battleship Missouri and the newly opened Pacific Aviation Museum.  All are well worth the price of admission.
