Club Acquisitions in 2002
I had rented a set of clubs when I played the first few times but now I needed a set of clubs to use for my beginner lessons (I was also not confident about what would be provided during the lessons or what to use to practice with between lessons).

Club Set #1 - I was not prepared to go to any big expense so, I bought some old steel irons at a local rummage sale for $12. June 3002 Ok for hitting balls at the range by someone who absolutely knows nothing whatsoever about golf.

Club Set #2 - A month later, I brought back my father's 22 year old clubs after visiting my mother. Since they were registered Spaldings, I thought they would be at least ok to use. After talking to my instructor however, I learned that even inexpensive clubs with today's technology would out perform these clubs. I did use them for the duration of the lessons and despite the clubs being heavy and feeling like I was hitting a light post with a baseball bat every time I hit a ball, I did pretty well with them. Following the lessons, I knew I had to buy clubs if I was going to enjoy this sport. July 2002

Club Set #3
I discussed buying clubs and getting fitted with my instructor. When I was unsure how much I wanted to spend and whether I wanted one of the four brands in stock, the fitting process never completed. I had asked around and heard from several sources that your body and swing doesn't settle in for new players for maybe 6-12 months and this could have an effect in your club purchase. The instructor agreed. I didn't want to get into big bucks when I wasn't even sure if I would be into golf for the long haul. I also had questions about my physical fitness, what if if physically couldn't play more than occasionally?

Based on these factors, I figured I would buy a cheap set for 6 months and if I still liked playing and was ok physically, I will by a better set. I came up with a dollar amount ($250.00) for this temporary set (not including the putter, 60 degree wedge or bag I bought later) and searched all over to get the best club set sale I could get for the money. I purchased a non-fitted set from a local sporting goods store (Big 5) for about $250. The clubs were South Bay Golf's (a local company) top of the line set. The set included 3-PW, 1,3,5, and a trouble wood in the box. They are Tungsten Copper weighted , all with 70 gram frequency matched graphite shafts. I've played about 40 nine hole rounds and hit lots of ball at the range. I thought they worked well for me. I noticed that the shafts appeared to be splintered near the head on the 4 & 5 irons and a cracked collar fitting on the 3 wood. Big 5 Sporting goods replaced all the damaged clubs. August 2002
