GM: "What are your thoughts on the PBEM experience?"
Alex: “PBEM gives people who don’t have the time, or the stubbornness to write a book a creative
outlet. So far I have met a lot of great people that are very gifted. I have also met some…interesting people.”
GM: "We all know you as Connor from the Expounders and Captain Xander and you are the CMO Kieran O'Connell from
the USS Champion. How do these characters differ from each other and what part of them do you most identify with on a personal
level?"
Alex: "Everything in life is a continuum for me. Each side of the continuum is a direct opposite –
Happy/Sad – Nasty/Friendly. I see the characters on a continuum. Connor is very conservative. He’s unemotional
– other than humor. He tends to avoid altercations that involve discussion. He’s the American Boy. Captain Xander
is less so. He is unemotional at times when is necessary, but he is also someone who is not afraid to say “I feel…”
Kieran is more nurturing being a physician. I liken him to Dr. Bashir – passionate, yet not wishy washy."
GM: "What do you see in the future for Dr. O'Connell?"
Alex: "Let’s see…a white picket fence, a dog, two kids…just kidding. I see Kieran as
growing more abstract. By this I mean thinking outside the box, putting him in others situations. An advocate".
GM: "Tell us about Alex?"
Alex: "What’s there to tell? I am a person that likes to be alone. I see a big difference between
being lonely and being alone. I don’t like clinginess, I don’t like being in a relationship, and I like being
by myself. With that said, I also enjoy the company of close friends. I like camaraderie. I like humor. There are three goals
that I see for myself and expect in others – self-advocacy, humor, and basic human rights."
GM: "How long have you been interested in Star Trek?"
Alex: "I started watching ST:TNG when it was on the air. When it went off I started watching a little
of TOS. I then watched the beginning of DS9, but I thought it went off the deep end. With VOY I watched the beginning, but
lost interest…same with ENT. Nothing is giving me a hook like TNG did.”
GM: " I have read a lot of bad press on Star Treks refusal to cast a homosexual character. Do you have any thoughts
on this issue? "
Alex "I don’t think it is a big deal. Have one, don’t have one. It Isn’t going to end
the world. However I would like to say that if Gene Roddenberry were alive, there would most likely be one. He had minorities
on television when others were locking the door on them. You could also see some innuendoes with episodes on TNG – i.e.,
Beverly and Odan; Riker and the sexless one, etc.
GM: "What is your favorite Star Trek Episode/Movie/Book?"
Alex: "My favorite episode is a tie between The Loss and oh, what’s the name of the one where that
guy dumps all his emotion into Troi? Oh well. I like Troi because I originally was going to become a clinical psychologist.
My favorite movie is hands down First Contact. Great job on that one! My favorite book is Guises of the Mind. It is about
a Catholic nun.”
GM: "
Don’t be shy, because if you are your character will be lost.
Don’t be over zealous without working it out with others because you will be perceived as out in left field.
