In September, 2003, the 911 tower located behind the fire station was struck by lightening.  Although it was well grounded, a surge of electricity entered the fire station and started a fire.

Chief Dwight Sheridan made an unscheduled stop at the fire station to pick up his TV-VCR combination unit, which the department had used for training.  When he entered the building, he discovered the fire.  The blaze was quickly extinguished, but caused considerable damage to the section of the building used as a meeting-training room, offices, storage and restrooms.

Later, when the firefighters were working on salvaging as much as possible from the building, they removed a large bulletin board located on the south wall.  Under the display, the wall was coated with soot except for what definitely appeared to be a bleeding heart.

When repainting this wall, the area of the bleeding heart was left undisturbed and a Plexiglas panel was placed over it.
