Welcome, here's a few photos of my home theater.

Screen and Shadowbox

This is a 120 inch diagonal Stewart Filmscreen Firehawk screen, surrounded by a shadowbox.

Shadowbox Closeup

In this close-up you can see the Screen Shadowbox is constructed of two types of black fabric. The fabric that is perpendicular to the screen is Commando Cloth, a heavy duty version of Duvetyne. This is an opaque matt fabric that absorbs reflections. It is pulled tight and looks like a solid material. The fabric parallel to the screen is Guilford of Maine fabric. It is a very loosely woven fabric that is acoustically transparent. Therefore it tends to let light through. There are four 9 foot removable frames covered with this fabric that conceals the front speakers.

Access to the speakers is gained when the four panels are removed. The main speakers are vintage Polk Audio SDA-1C's. The vertically stacked center channel speakers are vintage Polk Audio SDA CRS's. They have identical tweeters and mid-range drivers as the SDA-1C's.

In contrast the subwoofer (which is nearly invisible against the black background)is very new. It's a new Velodyne Digital Subwoofer.

Behind the screen is a very large window. It was completely covered by removable drywall panels. The panels are framed with 2" x 4"s with drywall on both sides. The interior of the panels are stuffed with fiberglass insulation. The outside of the panels, as well as the walls and ceiling behind the screen and speakers are covered with one inch of rigid fiberglass. It has a black covering which also helps reduce reflections, but it makes it difficult to photograph.

Subwoofer and Lower Center Channel Speaker

Here's a better photo of the subwoofer with the lower center channel speaker to the right of it.

The new Velodyne Digital Drive Subwoofer is very cool. It is adjusted by a remote control. Housed in the subwoofer is a tone generator, a real-time analyzer, and an 8-band parametric equalizer. The subwoofer has outputs for audio, a measurement microphone and video. These outputs are connected to your preamplifier and monitor. Through the use of the remote control the subwoofer then generates test frequency sweeps through your mains speakers and subwoofer. It then plots the real-time frequency response of the room at the location of the microphone. Using the remote control you adjust the parametric equalizer to smooth the frequency response.

The Upper Center Channel Speaker

The Upper Center Channel speaker is hung about nine feet in the air over the screen.

Closeup of Polk Audio SDA-1C Speaker
The screenwall and shadowbox assembly is constructed on a stage that is filled with 1,000 pounds of sand to reduce vibrations. The main speakers in turn are sitting on 15 inches of solid concrete block. The block is covered in black carpet to protect the speakers from abrasion. This raises their tweeters so they are vertically centered on the screen.

Side Surround Speakers

Side Surround Speakers
I use Polk Audio f/x500i speakers for my side surrounds. They are set for dipole operation. These speakers are concealed inside columns. Also concealed in the columns are compact subwoofers.  The full range side surround signal is sent to the subwoofers and to external crossovers where the bass below 80 hz is filtered from the Polk dipoles.  The net result is full range surround channels.

This arrangement was setup to take advantage of my Lexicon processor's Bass Enhance feature.

Surround Back Speaker
This is one of the two Polk Audio LC265i In-Wall speakers that handle the surround back channels.  These are Polk Audio's top-of-the-line In-Wall speakers, and they are mounted inside Polk's performance enclosures.  The enclosures are quite large, 55" high x 14" wide x 4" deep.

Acoustic Treatment

Acoustic Treatments
The entire front wall, the soffits and the first four feet of front side walls are all covered with one inch of rigid fiberglass. The remainder of the room has fiberglass from the floor up to ear level. One inch of polyester batting is placed above ear level. The fiberglass is used for sound absorption. The polyester batting is less absorbent so it permits more reflection and diffusion of the sound. Fabric is stapled to the furring strips. The plywood fixtures with the circle in the middle permits attaching fabric and anchoring sconces.

Equipment Racks
These Middle Atlantic Slim 5 racks are on casters. They can be pushed from the back wall to gain access to the rear of the equipment.

InFocus ScreenPlay 7205 Projector
The InFocus ScreenPlay 7205 DLP projector has a bright image and the colors are very accurate. All in all I'm very pleased with it.

Buttkicker Tactile Transducer

Buttkicker Tactile Transducer
This is a photo of one of the two Buttkicker tactile transducers that are mounted inside the seating platform.  They are very powerful and do a good job of shaking the rear row of seating down to infrasonic frequencies as low as 5 hz.

Seating and Seating Platform
The four rear seats sit on a platform about 14 inches high.  The walls are covered in Guilford of Maine Medium Grey fabric.  The columns are covered with Guilford of Maine Black fabric.

Jaymar Cinema Seating
These cinema style recliners are very comfortable.  The motorized reclining mechanisms are a considerable improvement over manual recline.

Jaymar Cinema Seating
Here's a better view of the first row of seating.  I'm a big fan of the Buttkicker brand tactile transducers.  The problem is that they are rather large and will not fit inside the chairs without interfering with the reclining mechanism.  I got around that problem by installing a transducer inside each of the wedge arms in the front loveseat.  The wedges are rigidly attached to the center chairs and provide lots of vibration.  In fact the vibration is so strong that even though the end seats are not rigidly attached to the wedge arms, the vibrations still carry over and provide a very satifactory effect.

Wet Bar

Wet Bar
In the rear of the theater we have a small wet bar.  To minimize noise I installed the very quite Echelon model U-Line refrigerator.  I used Techline cabinetry.  They were the only manufacturer I could find that offered dark gray contemporary cabinets.

Sconces
Here's a closeup of one of the five sconces.  These are made by Justice Design Group and they are literally works of art.  The globes are hand-blown French glass and the bases are glazed ceramic.

New Wave Contemporary Rug

This hand tufted contemporary wool rug inspired by the art of Gustav Klimt works well with the Art Deco theme of the theater. Along with the sconces and seating, it adds a colorful departure from the dominant monochromatic grey and black color scheme. The wool probably aids in the acoustics by helping to absorb sound reflecting off the floor.
