Chapter 3: Welcome to Harlan County

It never rains but it pours.

When last we left our intrepid investigators, they had met with misfortune on the plane ride over. Sooner or later Barney will probably reappear and solidify his legendary dumb luck for surviving plane crashes. Although they are wet and cold and miserable. Maurice will be able to find his way back to the nearest city.

(Note: Don't worry about the possibilty that Sean will try to leave his little buddy behind. being Telekinetic, Maurice always seems to turn up without being invited. "Damnit I could have sworn I locked you in the car! "<Slurp!>) Even if Sean tries to leave Maurice behind in Chicago, they will discover him stowed away in one of the paper file boxes wagging his tail.)

The Characters might also have to deal with antipersonnel devices left behind by moonshiners in these parts. Trespassing is a good way to get yourself shotgunned around here. Elaine should caution the other players not to show their IDA badges.

Tooling around in Lynch Kentucky is going to be a frustrating prospect for the Characters and an exercise in improvisation for the GM. The Players can literally go anywhere and get involved with anything they like...the only only thing that goes easy on the GM is that there isn't much of anywhere to go and nobody wants to talk to the characters.

A few words ought to be said about the coal company. It owns nearly everything worth owning around these parts. It owns the store where people buy their groceries (or go into debt for their groceries as the case may be.) The local politicians and parson are often appointed by the company and so is the sherrif. those disatisfied with the company find themselves out of work and usually they stay that way.

This situation is not helped by the fact that eastern kentucky communities are extremely tight knit communities and strangers are viewed with suspicion. Most people in the area are aware of what the clan is up to in this area and most have a pretty good idea of where they are too. but they'd sooner die than tell an outsider. The very few black persons who live in this area are far too scared of reprisals to talk.

Indoor plumbing exists and electricity and phones exist in this part of the world. but they are hardly common in homes..especially in the hills. there aren't a lot of cars but there are a lot of coal trucks going to and fro at all hours of the night. Schools and churchs are usually one room affairs. Most of the people who make a living independent of the company are farmers.

If Barney is left alone for any length of time, he will get jumped by a truck load of rednecks bent on extracting his crap via beating. (naturally his body of bronze will prevent any lasting injury.)

Likely locales for visiting include:

The Players might get the bright idea of trying to get IDA to come and bail them out. While this is not very pulpy, it is at least possible. You should however point out that whoever comes will have to deal with a long drive. (Harlan county is not really convienient to any major city in any direction...that i know of.)

Eventually the players will discover that the Klan that they seek is up in the mountains, While nobody is really sure where, signs point to somewhere out by the old Cold Mountain mine.
