What is it in the Prussian character that allways seeks perfection at the expense of humanity. To seek perfection is futilty unless you make the intuitive leap that the only thing that all things bow to eventually is Entropy. Karl made this leap. A talented engineer with no social life and a self perfection fetish. Karl eventually cracked under the strain...Well, He had help. Sarah was dispatched to seek him out and bring him into the fold and that's exactly what she did.
While Karl hasn't left off his self perfecting, he has changed his allegiance and occasionally indulges in the sybaritic pleasure that Sarah is so good at encouraging. Karl is convinced that with his help, Rausch will win. He doesn't like Lao and he doesn't respect Mcgowan.
