After reading her late husband's journal and feeling like one
gigantic raw nerve because of it, Cordelia decided there was one
thing she could do. Giving herself a little time to get a hold of
herself, she called on the one man she thought might shed some light
on a few things, at least give her names of the abbreviated-Jack
Anniston. Therefore, a letter went out in the post, and the man
arrived at the Nyles house posthaste.
Cordelia and Jack exchanged a few small pleasantries, but Jack immediately knew there was something troubling her. When asked, she told him that she had found Robert's journal, and had read it cover to cover. Jack looked like he'd been hit with a fish and like he was ready to bolt out the door in a heartbeat. However, he stayed and asked her, excitedly, if there were any mention of the whereabouts of the staff. When she replied in the negative, he let out a stream of expletives that Cordelia let slide, under the circumstances. Jack also asked for brandy, which Cordelia happily supplied, having already started into it herself.
Anyway, when the journal was brought up again and Cordelia told him there were personal things in it that he might not want to see, Jack looked even more like he wanted to flee. Cordelia drew from this that he knew of Robert's indiscretion, but she spoke nothing of it. She convinced herself that that wasn't the important matter. Instead, she asked him to clarify things, to stop hiding what they did. Jack launched into an impassioned, pacing monologue about him being a killer, a soldier on the front lines, and how he was not proud of what it was he was often forced to do.
Cordelia listened impassively, trying not to let things trouble her, sipping slowly at her brandy. After talking of this for a bit, her desperately trying to be comforting with nonchalance, she mentioned that there was an entry in the journal she suspected Robert wrote the night he died.
That got Jack's attention, and the two spent time pouring over it. Jack, unfortunately, had no idea who this C.B. was, or what Robert was into, saying they didn't always work together. However, he did promise to help look into the matter.
Eventually, Jack did start looking into the journal, chuckling over memories, and cursing Maximillian Praegar causing Jack to apologize for language. He did go into a little detail regarding some of the names, talking horribly of the technocrats and saying Robert gave Childress too much credit. He also confirmed that A.C. was Alistair Crowley, and with a little smile and laugh, pointed out E.C. as Edgar Cavendish. Jack was most surprised to learn that Cordelia knew Mr. Cavendish, and in fact, had known him all her life as much as any of the man's neighbors could (see 'Spirit of Her Age'). "Then you know Deirdre?" Jack asked. No, Cordelia didn't, but she suddenly knew who the mysterious D.C. was, and while Jack blithely went on about how good friends she was with Robert, Cordelia tried to stifle the horrible ill feeling she had.
Toward the end of the visit, Jack did, perhaps inadvertently, kill that terrible feeling in Cordelia, by reminiscing how Robert would bring out pictures of Cordelia and Justine and smile when times were bad. Jack admitted to jealousy, as he had no one. Cordelia touched lightly on a taboo subject, asking if that were true, and knowing the answer. The two shared a brief smile at one another, and Jack swore himself to her service in the matters she was seeking into. "Are we not friends?" Cordelia asked him with a smile. And, taking her hand into his, trembling slightly, he swore that to be true as well.
With a clearing of his throat, Jack stood and declared that she will hear from him in two days, unless something happened. Cordelia admonished him to be careful, and Jack stepped out, leaving Cordelia to stare at the closed door.
