Ownership (new background)
The player with this background owns something or owns part of something and is thus able to draw on it for various purposes
This background simulates a player owning a business either partially or lock, stock, and barrel. For each dot purchased the Player may choose a dot from another background. These phantom dots belong to the player as long as he or she maintains their current level of ownership. The player may not commit more than 2 phantom dots to any one background.
Example; Arthur buys shares in a company (purchases 1 dot of Ownership for a large(5 dot) company) As he purchases more shares he begins to have more of the benefits of that company. At one dot he chooses to increase his liquidity (resources 1) At two dots he elects to network (1 dot of contacts) at three dots he cozies up to one of the major shareholders ( 1 dot of mentor or allies, your choice) at four, he extends his powerbase (1 dot of influence or followers) At five he muscles the CEO out of his chair and takes over the company (1 dot of Backing to go with whatever he's allready got.) If Arthur ever loses levels of ownership he'll lose those benefits in reverse order.
Companies are rated by size:
1) news stand (or stock in a larger comapny. may be bought at level one multiple times.)
2) flowershop, tiny boutique, private investigator office, hole in the wall restaurant,
3) Bar, nightclub, Ritzy restaurant, small to middling sized hotel, theater,
4) Large hotel, newspaper, large but local corporation, or a chain of smaller operations
5) Ford Motors, Massive, or at least profoundly expensive ,corporation.
This background also can simulate a person who invests in a particular enterprise without owning it.
Example: While everybody knows Rudy, the owner of Club Castaway, most are not aware that Mr. Johari is a silent partner in the club and enjoys a certain status that has not gone unnoticed by the staff. (Rudy has three dots Owning the club but Johari has 2 dots which enable him to bump reservations for his own parties and eat for free. Occasionally, Rudy pays Mr Johari a percentage (2 dots of Resources)
Of course if you're going to have this background you need a background enhancement:
Los Honcho Grande
Characters with this enhancement are considered to be nearly nations unto themself. The amount of land, resources, and companies that they have acquired are truly startling and they may not even be aware of the true extent of their empire. Characters with this enhancement are considered to have an additional 4 phantom dots of backgrounds. ( Note that phantom dots do not count towards totals necessary to achieve another background enhancement. also the player may still not commit more than 2 dots to any one background.)
This Enhancement is good for the eccentric tychoon who has become a hermit or the aggressive maniac who practically owns the entire town.
