It would appear that a trip to Harlan County is in order. News that
Elaine will not be happy about. (the Gm should prepare a note ahead
of time to give to Elaine's player that she/he should milk that scene
for all it's worth. Give extra Exp for a decent performance.) In the
end though, it seems clear that the case leads to Lynch, Kentucky and
these dumbass city boys will get themselves shotgunned without a
native guide.
Getting to Lynch isn't exactly an easy task, Technically the players can drive but since the interstate system doesn't exist in America yet the trip will take something like a day and a half. if the whole team goes, the car will contain two irish men, a white woman, and a black man. a racially mixed group of this sort will draw all sorts of unpleasant attention. If driving at night, you can expect to be harassed by local law enforcement. Father Mike will find for the first time in his life that being a catholic priest won't cut any ice at all.
Thankfully, I have provided a pilot (Barney) and his usual plane which belongs to the company (The Silver Fox) Use the stats in the Adventure! book for a Cargo Plane (because that's exactly what it is.)
The plane ride itself is somewhat uneventful if a bit cramped. The hold is full of paper files that are supposed to be transported to the Nashville IDA office sometime this week. Flying absolutely fascinates Maurice. This might be a good time for Elaine to try to explain a bit about the KKK to a bunch of enlightened yankee boys
As the group gets closer to Lynch, rain (or sleet or snow, if you prefer) begins coming down hard. No lightning and thunder though. So it's kind of a surprise when the wing of the plane explodes.
Perhaps i should back up and explain:
At this particular point in history, an unprecedented mine strike is going on. The mine owners have thrown hundreds of families out of company housing and has used their connections to import strike breakers and scab workers. It is a little known fact that in order to restrict the growth of organized crime in America it became very difficult to emigrate from Italy during the largest period of immigration in american history. As a result, Organized crime got into smuggling Italians..and naturally all those Italians have to go somewhere. CCC Mayo and various other mine owners have employed large numbers of italians to keep the mines running.
Menawhile the poor eastern kentuckians are out of work and sincerely pissed at the completely innocent italians. In an effort to scare off the Italians, The miners have gotten a hold of a cropduster or two and have begun bombing the company row-houses from the air. (one of the first recorded instances of aerial bombing.) I'm assuming the miners are using stolen dynamite or carbide as their primary explosive.
Some of the KKK are behind this bombing in order to break the strike and get the "Good God-fearing white Protestant men back at work where they belong". The fact that they get to blast a bunch Catholics is jimmies on the sundae. So naturally when another plane turns up in the area, The bad guys assume the worst. Using the element of surprise, crummy weather for cover and superior manuevering, They blow an engine off the plane before anybody knows what's happening.
Naturally, the players won't know why it's happening until long after the fact. But it's nice to know why things are coming apart isn't it?
Of course there won't be enough chutes. and landing at the tiny airfield is pretty much out of the question. Barney will probably be able to ride the plane down and survive as long as he takes no more hits from the enemy crop duster. (The enemy pilot will make three passes, his total piloting pool is only 5 dice and his athletics pool for lobbing the bombs is only 5 (he must have 3 successes to hit the plane because of the weather.) but his is in a much more mobile plane and it is undamaged. Barney's piloting skill will be tested to the limit.
The Players may of course elect to pot shoot at the enemy plane once the cargo door is open. (it'll get stuck, but only long enough to stress them out.) the players are at -5 dice to hit the enemy plane from this vantage. Sadly none of the characters possess Trichshot. But there is allways the possibility of dramatic editing and dumb luck. If it shakes out that way, Let them grease the enemy pilot. it certainly won't improve their situation at all.
As mentioned, There is one less chute than there are people aboard. Barney can attempt to land the plane at major minuses to his pilot roll but if he elects this course he will sustain 3 levels of Lethal damage above his soak. which will hinder his ability to leave the plane. He might also elect to simply crash while surrounded by large amounts of paper files. This will save him from damage but he might be trapped under the files and need to make a Might roll or two to escape. While Fire will probably not kill him. Smoke inhalation certainly will and an explosion (6 turns after touchdown) will definitely do the trick.
Assuming that the players haven't had any unpleasant misadventures with their chutes, They will find themselves on the ground in various states of disarry or even possibly wounded. in the cold wet rain of Harlan county. Miles from any human settlement....and Barney dead. After all, nobody could have survived that crash.
So now what?
